About Me

Hi there and welcome to my blog, Beauty Au Natural. My name is Heather and this is a page about me. I'm not sure what everyone wants to but know here goes:
  • I currently work as a college librarian in upstate NY
  • Before getting my masters to be a librarian, I was an art major and psych minor. I started to get a masters to become an art therapist but never finished.
  • This is actually my 4th blog. I used to have a Myspace blog that was very random. Then I had 3 blogs on Blogger, one about general life stuff, one about foods and food intolerances and baking and finally this blog about natural beauty products.
  • I have severe chemical sensitivities that started to show up when I was 17 years old which was in 1994. It took me a long time to figure out what was going on and many trips to doctors. Not only do I have chemical sensitivities but I also have some unusual allergies that I found out about when I was tested by a dermatologist.
  • I started using natural beauty products in 2001. I decided to go as natural as I could in 2008 and started to toss anything I had or gift it if it wasn't natural. I have fallen off the wagon a few times but am really learning a lot about chemicals in beauty products and now try to stick with things that are as natural as possible at all times.
  • I love the art of make up application. I really enjoy putting together color combinations for natural looks and also doing fun make up like halloween looks. I often go about it as I would painting a portrait. I just start grabbing colors and brushes in a whirlwind.
  • I started my movement or mission, if you could call it that, called "BE Nirvana" in May 2009. I first called it a BE diet when I felt overwhelmed by how much Bare Escentuals make up I owned and decided not to buy anything until I had worn all my eye colors at least once. A forum friend helped me rename it "Nirvana" and it stuck. Many thanks to her! It is a much nicer term than diet.
  • I love discovering natural brands of beauty and body products. It is so great to find so much out there and available, both in high end places, natural food stores and your local drugstore.
  • I live with my boyfriend of 6 years. We live in a simple 2 bedroom apartment in the upstairs of an old Victorian house that is being renovated by our very green friendly energy efficient landlords.
  • My favorite colors are green, purple and turquoise/teal.
  • I love to travel and hope to see much of the world someday. The farthest from home that I have been is San Francisco though Portland, OR comes in at a close 2nd.
  • I love art and being creative though I am not as good about making time for it now that I work full-time. I also love going to art museums, galleries, funky artsy shops and arts & crafts festivals.
  • I am 1st generation Lebanese-American on my dad's side. My mom's side of the family has been here since colonial times.
  • I love to constantly learn new things. Whether I be learning how to do or make something or reading books about things. I would probably take classes for the rest of my life if I could afford it and had time for it.
  • I watch too much TV and always have. I don't like or watch reality TV and generally hate it unless you count Food Network shows. Most reality TV makes me far too upset with the world so I find it best to avoid it altogether.
  • I am a very picky eater. I am terrible about eating veggies and lots of foods tastes too strong to me. I also have textural issues.
  • I have had a lifelong battle with my weight. When I was very young I didn't eat enough, now I overdo it. On top of the picky eating, I also have food intolerance issues. It seems like my body is rejecting processed foods and chemicals now the same way it did with beauty products when I was in my late teens.
  • I am the oldest of 3 siblings. I have a sister who is 3 years younger than me and had a brother 10 years younger than me. My brother died of cancer just days before his 8th birthday when I was 18.
  • Things I collect other than mineral make up: funky artisan crafted jewelry, dichroic glass, cupcake kitche, Strawberry Shortcake Christmas ornaments, Hello Kitty stuff, Christmas CDs, Fossil bags and Birkenstock shoes.
  • I am very introverted and tend to study people before I open up a lot.
  • Let me know if there is anything else you want to know.
Me at 17, the end of Junior Year when we got our Senior Pics taken...I had my first ever chemical reaction on my lips.  Luckily I was mostly healed and covered up the rest with make up for this pic.  Found out later it was from a lip balm with SPF chemicals.  My poor lips puffed up and blistered as well as the skin around my mouth which turned red like I drank red kool-aid.
Me with Bravon Pascua, Master Artist from Bare Escentuals. Oct 2011  He did such a beautiful job on my makeup that I almost couldn't stand washing my face before bed that night.
