How I Attended a Live Taping with Lissa Rankin (AKA OMG You Might Be Seeing My Face on PBS)

I am an affiliate of Hay House, the book publishing company I discuss below. I received copies of the 3 books shown in the image on this post as a swag bag thank you for attending this event. My opinion is completely honest no matter how I receive any items mentioned on this blog.

Many of you know I am getting really into studying and learning about all aspects of health and wellness.  While I am much healthier than I have been, I still have room to grow.  I don't want to be skinny for skinny's sake; I don't want to feel just okay because I am on a bunch of pills I pop to make symptoms go away; I want to be healthy, well and whole. I want to be involved in my own health regimen.

Someone that I recently discovered on my mission to learn and grow is Lissa Rankin, M.D.   She is the author of, Mind Over Medicine: Scientific Proof That You Can Heal Yourself.  (Marked down to $12 at the Hay House, just click on the book pic or title). This book is about how stress and emotions can wreak havoc on our bodies and our health and how changes to this can help us heal.  She is not about giving up Western medicine and she is not about blaming people for their diseases and illness, she is about helping people heal.  This is all science based info about how our mind affects our bodies, not a bunch of foofy wishy washy mind powers to cure you stuff.  Something I have been learning is that our bodies are able to heal.  This doesn't necessarily mean we will be cured but we can certainly heal and feel better and live longer.  Who doesn't want that?  Healing is a process that involves our bodies, minds and spirits.  You know what I mean?  When I am depressed or really stressed out, I sure as heck don't feel good physically.  When I am happy, I feel really great.  Am I no longer flat footed, lactose & egg intolerant and do I no longer have allergies and asthma? No, but I sure feel better than when I am bummed out and a lot of the symptoms of those health issues are lessened. That is a simple way to look at it but it makes sense to me. Your body is trying to tell you something.  Listen to it.

Personally, I have made a lot of changes physically health-wise but know I have a lot of work to do in relation to emotions and stress.  Our thoughts can really have an affect on us, negative thoughts about ourselves, stressful anxious thoughts about what might happen, loneliness, and even boredom can all have an impact on our health.  I see Lissa's book as a new tool in my health and wellness tool belt. I still go to my doctors, of course I do, but working with them along with excellent resources like this are how I keep seeing improvements.  I am my own health advocate.  I have doctors that I like and trust and who do not mock my choices for things like acupuncture or reiki.  It took me a long time to find doctors that I feel work with me and not just at me. I am still reading the Mind Over Medicine book and learning a lot.  I am doing what feels right for me. If this isn't right for you, that is fine, do what works for you.  We are all different and need to believe in what we do for ourselves.

The Taping:

So anyway, my ride to a work conference was running late in June and I sat playing in Facebook until she arrived.  I saw Lissa Rankin's post on facebook that she was going to be in Albany later in June.  I posted, "You are coming here?!?!"  She was indeed.  Our local PBS station, WMHT was doing a live taping of a special with Lissa as well as a taping of a DVD she is recording through PBS.  I checked my planner and RSVP'd via email before my coworker picked me up and I was so excited. Destiny!

The day of the taping, I started to get very nervous and down on myself.  I have gained weight since injuring my back and was feeling very self-conscious.  When you RSVP, they warn that you are going to be recorded in the audience and I was in panic mode.  I calmed myself down, said nicer things to myself and used some Rescue Remedy and felt a bit better.  I needed to calm myself, be more confident in myself and think about what a great opportunity I was going to have. Even though I am immersed in learning about body, mind and spirit health and wellness, I still think bad thoughts and need to get myself out of them.

Luckily, I had a friend who was also attending.  I was so happy to see her and her hubby appear in the crowd waiting to enter the studio.  I was not alone.  They had us sign waivers which is how you really knew you were going to be recorded.  They do the whole hello audience, then they walk through applauding and responding to things going on and pretending he cameras are not there. After a while, the recording started.

Lissa was great.  She is a great speaker, down to earth and at times a little silly which is always a plus in my book. You can tell she is very passionate about her message about health.  They recorded in 3 parts.  Two parts will air on PBS in the fall and one part will be bonus material on the DVD which you can get from PBS in the fall when you donate.  The whole process is really fascinating with this sort of taping.  The need to stop and do a part over and the audience having to react as though they never heard it before is a fun one.  The hardest one for me was pretending the camera was not there.  At first I was relieved because they said the camera guy would mostly tape the front row but he taped me and my friend and her hubby A LOT.  I am so glad I had a good hair day and bumped up my make up before I went. You may be seeing my face on PBS this fall LOL  The only other live taping like this I had ever attended was the Conan O'Brien show when he was still in NYC and that was a bit less intimate.

During one break, she hung out around the audience.  I so badly wanted to say hi but knew she had been busy and she was chatting with people it seemed like she knew pretty well so I hung back.  I flashed her a little smile thinking maybe she would recognize me from how often I post on her Facebook page or at least she might remember a nice smile from someone there that day.

I left feeling invigorated and really ready to take charge of my health.  I felt so full of hope and have to say, though some stuff I know I need to do in order to really make changes make me nervous, because change can be scary, I know I can do it.

The other cool thing about this taping was getting a swag bag from Hay House.  We got copies of Lissa's book, Mind Over Medicine, The Tapping Solution by Nick Ortner and Crazy Sexy Kitchen by Kris Carr.  I already owned copies of Mind Over Medicine and The Tapping Solution but I am always happy to get free books.  I am a librarian after all.  They all came in a ginormous Hay House tote bag...I do love a good tote bag.
If you want to look into more Lissa Rankin stuff, you can check her out for free.  She has 2 TEDx Talks on Youtube, a blog & info at  and also this great telecall she did with BrenĂ© Brown. If you look closely at the telecall page, you might see feedback from me, Heather Shalhoub down towards the bottom of the page (woohoo!).  I meant every word I said there.
