Acure Organics Sensitive Facial Cleanser and Facial Cream

I am not affiliated with this company. These items were sent to me for review purposes only. My opinion is completely honest no matter how I receive any items mentioned on this blog.

I have been testing some new products from Acure Organics.  Two of those products are their Sensitive Facial Cleanser and Sensitive Facial Cream.  Since they seem to go together, in my use and opinion, I figured I should write about them together.

I have been using the Sensitive Facial Cleanser and Moisturizer each morning.  I keep the cleanser in the shower and the moisturizer by the bathroom sink.  Some evenings, I also use the moisturizer after cleansing.  I have to say, my face seems quite happy with these products.

The cleanser goes a long way.  You need about the size of a pea on damp hands and then you rub your hands together to foam the cleanser.  I was impressed at how much I got out of that little dab of cleanser.  If you use more than a pea-sized amount, be prepared to cleanse your neck, chest and possibly arms and belly too.  This product feels nice on, very smooth and not harsh at all.  It does have a mild scent but nothing fragrance-like. I assume I am just smelling the oils and other healthy ingredients. The Sensitive Facial Cleanser retails for $14.99.

The facial cream is also very nice. It comes in an adorable chubby little tube.  You don't need a lot of it.  Yet again, a little goes a long way.  I apply it to my face and neck.  It feels very soothing and hydrating on my skin.  The mild-scent is similar to the cleanser.  Nothing harsh or fragrance-like.  Just a nice mild clean smell.  This product is full of some amazing ingredients.  The Sensitive Facial Cream retails for $19.99.

Both products are both paraben free, vegan, gluten-free, free of synthetic fragrance, free of silicones, pthalate free and they are fair trade certified ingredients. Shopping from Acure Organics is shopping from a trustworthy company that cares about giving high quality products, being good to your health and skin, good to the environment, kind to animals and sustainable.

An Earth Day Live Chat with Kristen Arnett - Makeup Artist

I am not affiliated with this company. My opinion is completely honest no matter how I receive any items mentioned on this blog.
Image from EcoSalon

I had the pleasure of participating in a live Earth Day chat on facebook with Kristen Arnett - Makeup Artist hosted by EcoSalon andsponsored by: Goodebox, REVOLUTION Organics, Stark skincare, Green Beauty Team, Alima Pure, Juice Beauty, Clairvoyant Beauty, and Kahina Giving Beauty.
A little about Kristen from her website: Kristen Arnett has been immersed in the world of beauty for over 15 years, with roles ranging from product development to high-profile fashion work. She is both an international makeup artist and the founder and editor-in-chief of GreenBeautyTeam.com
I asked if it was okay to share some of the chat info on my blog and got likes from Kristen and Goodebox so I am going to take that as an okay.  If not, someone tell me and I will remove this post!

I am going to share all the questions and tips and product suggestions from the chat while removing the identity of individuals who asked questions since they did not give me permission to share their info.

I hope my editing works so you can more easily follow along and get the full jist of the questions and answers.

Question:  What do you recommend for morning puffy eyes?
Kristen Arnett's Answer:  Clairvoyant Beauty has a really nice cucumber gel that is quite soothing and helps. Otherwise just about anything cool and a light facial massage.
This is the Clairvoyant Beauty Depuffing Gel: http://www.clairvoyantbeauty.com/products/depuffing-cucumber-cranberry-eye-gel
Question:  Are there any secret potions to lengthen and thicken eyelashes? I saw a YouTube video with a girl saying to put petroleum jelly on your eyelashes to make them grow- but WE know that's not safe. Any suggestions?
Kristen Arnett's Answer:  Let me get up off the floor laughing first about how someone could actually make a video saying how petroleum would help eyelashes grow...now there are some products on the market that are more natural which promote lash growth BUT this all depends on much of a purist you want to be with it. It really takes a more science lab kind of thing to do that.

Question: ! I've already learned so much from your site about safe SPFs and BB creams. Do you have any advice for the best BB creams on a budget?
Kristen Arnett's Answer:  I'm so glad you already took the time to read about BB creams and SPF on Green Beauty Team. I did write this article hoping to offer some good background info on the subject (for those of you who haven't read it, go here: http://greenbeautyteam.com/answers-advice/makeup/bb-creams-what-are-they-do-they-work-do-you-need-one).
Now to answer your question, I am going to step on some toes with this answer, but I honestly think you are better off not buy a BB cream. Just get the right products that are good for your skin and put them on layer by layer.

Question:  I'm pretty bad at putting on foundation but do you have any tips for dry skin types and using foundation? I also have to work around small bumps (from stubborn acne scars) that I want covered.
Kristen Arnett's Answer:  So first let me ask you, is your skin dry because you dry it out to control the acne or has it become dry on its own since you had acne? The reason I ask is that your skin is the first thing to address so you don't have to wear so much makeup - but it also helps me what texture of foundation might be right for you.
Follow Up:  Ooh that's a great question! I'm in my 20s right now and I have noticed my skin has become noticeably dryer. At least compared to my oily/teen-acne filled skin in the not-so-good old days. But actually I don't use any products to dry my acne out out. I normally use a light facial oil and sometimes a Konjac sponge for gentle exfoliation.   I really hope fruit acids will lighten some of my acne scars. And trying to not pick at the pimples is just the hardest thing ever!
Kristen Arnett's Response:   here's an article for you: http://greenbeautyteam.com/answers-advice/skin-care/stop-touching-your-face/

Question:  What is the difference between BB and CC creams?
Kristen Arnett's Answer:  The thing about BB and CC creams is that they are multi tasking formulas. What I've found is that I prefer CC creams to BB Creams. The one from Juice Beauty is actually really nice. CC creams are lighter and not as thick/chalky. I find it's a bit less pigment than a tinted moisturizer however. Both formulas offer SPF protection.
Here's the Juice Beauty CC Cream Kristen mentioned: http://www.juicebeauty.com/cc/
Question:  Is there a particular brand of green skincare you recommend for sensitive/reactive skin?
Kristen Arnett's Answer:  To me ALL skin is sensitive and reactive so I really think it's about keeping things very simple and trying it out in sample size first. Shall I just plug the heck out of Goodebox now - that's the beauty of it. Low commitment sampling. You can check out this article for some great ideas on caring for sensitive skin: http://greenbeautyteam.com/answers-advice/skin-care/am-i-being-sensitive-10-ways-to-care-for-sensitive-skin/

Question: What clean shampoo do you recommend that won't leave my hair looking limp or oily?
Kristen Arnett's Answer:  - regarding a shampoo - that's tricky without knowing your hair and skin type. Limp and oily comes from using a shampoo that leaves behind residue. I've had good luck with Neuma, Giovanni and the brands listed here: http://greenbeautyteam.com/answers-advice/hair/natural-shampoos-and-conditioners-you-have-to-try/

Question: What primer and foundation do you use during photo shoots?
Kristen Arnett's Answer:  I don't always use a primer on shoots - I think they are 80% unnecessary. For foundations, I really dabble between a variety of brands such as rms beauty, Vapour Organic Beauty, Alima Pure, Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics and W3LL PEOPLE
Here's a link to Alima Pure's foundations, as Kristen mentioned above: http://www.alimapure.com/face/satin-matte-foundation
Question:  Is there anything I can do about the dark, dark "circles" under my eyes? Besides just try to conceal them (which doesn't really work)?
Kristen Arnett's Answer: dark circles can be related to so many things. I have a few links for you to look at. This http://greenbeautyteam.com/answers-advice/makeup/dark-circles-and-bags-be-gone/
...More on concealing dark circles http://www.truthinaging.com/makeup/makeup-memo-concealer-lesson
...Also this video is great for evening out skin tone http://www.truthinaging.com/makeup/makeup-memo-video-how-to-even-out-skin-tone

Question: I have a question, how can I whiten discoloration on the back caused by acne scarring?
Kristen Arnett's Answer: your question about lightening acne scars is a good one, but to be honest there's very few things that are truly effective which are natural. Depending on how dark the scar is laser might be the only option. If they are lighter, then fruit acids could work. Generally all acne scars will fade on their own over time. Remember don't pick at the pimples!

Question: What can we Use for a Glowing Looking Skin ? Any Cream or Milk ?
also What do you recommend for a Natural LipGloss ?
Could You give us a Moisture Cream Recipe to make at Home ?
Kristen Arnett's Answer:  You have quite a few questions that actually can be answered by more articles on Green Beauty Team. So I'll direct you there and tell you one I have quite a few favorite natural lip glosses. It's actually the most common natural product to find in the beauty market. Primitive Makeup, Juice Beauty, BITE Beauty, Dr.Hauschka USA and about 100 more brands make great ones. Do some searching around in this section: http://greenbeautyteam.com/category/answers-advice/skin-care/

Question:  I'm in my mid forties and would love a recommendation for an all-natural wrinkle cream?
Kristen Arnett's Answer: regarding a skin cream that's all natural, again it really depends on your skin type and a whole variety of conditions that are unique to you. Obviously we have some great natural skin brands represented here such as Clairvoyant Beauty and Juice Beauty. I'm also a big fan of Dr. Alkaitis Holistic Organic Skin Food. Some people just use coconut oil and call it good.

Question:  Is there a tinted moisturizer with SPF that you could recommend for hot/humid Miami weather?
Kristen Arnett's Answer:  I have been to Florida and will say that a tinted moisturizer sounds torturous to me! That humidity would just make me feel as if I were melting. My suggestion put your SPF on, then concealer under the eyes, and do mineral powder like Alima Pure over the rest of the face.

This was my Question: Do you have makeup free days or low makeup days? If you just throw on a few products instead of a full face of makeup, what products do you use? Do you suggest them for everyone?
Kristen Arnett's Answer:  Hey Heather! I have makeup free days ALL the time! Sometimes I forget to put makeup on before leaving the house, then it's a mad dash to put something on at the last second. I fully support that women do not need to fully cover their faces! When you really want to go for it, there's truly a myriad of brands out there to use that depend on the finish you'd most prefer. I do a lot of makeup lessons (both virtually and in person) for women in every walk of life (actresses, singers, moms, business women, teens, brides) and there's not one formula that I give out.
My reply: Thanks Kristen! I do no makeup days too, especially now that I am happy with my skin.
Kristen Arnett's response:  Love to hear it! I'm the same way.

Question:  any recommendations for treating dry skin?
Kristen Arnett's Answer: dry skin is often related to internal imbalance (as is acne and oily skin). So check out a few of our articles on the topic. Maybe you are deficient in Potassium or maybe you just naturally have dry skin, or maybe it's the weather... see where I'm going with this? http://greenbeautyteam.com/answers-advice/skin-care/dry-skin-pack-in-potassium/

Question:  Have any favorite facial oils?
Kristen Arnett's Answer:  I have SO many facial oils that I love. Current obessions include: Josh Rosebrook Skin and Hair Care, Dr. Alkaitis Holistic Organic Skin Food May Lindstrom SKIN also MUN...I totally forgot to mention Kahina Giving Beauty - duh! There's like 3 bottles in my bathroom right now. The blend of oils (not just the argan) is really luscious and nourishing. I also like the toner which isn't drying - great for more arid climates.

A note from Goodebox: And not all Argan oil is the same, so choose a high quality one like Kahina Giving Beauty's as Kristen mentioned above. It's A-mazing: http://kahina-givingbeauty.com/shop/kahina-argan-oil/
Question:  I have combination skin that breaks out easily, is there a not so heavy foundation that will keep an even tone (not shiny on my t zone) and won't mess with my skin ?
Kristen Arnett's Answer: In my experience, most traditional makeup these days won't cause pimples, rather irritations. So are you getting pimples or irritations from your makeup do you think? Most foundation lines these days are going to leave skin glowy, because that's the modern look, then you can use a setting powder in the tzone to take away extra shine.

Question: I have a question about blush...what do you like better, cream or powder?
Kristen Arnett's Answer:  I am a BIG fan of cream blush, but to be honest I often layer them. So I'll use something like a hot pink from REVOLUTION Organics and then go over it with a bit of shimmery bronze powder - ever so lightly - the Alima Pure on in Belize is nice.
Here's a link to the REVOLUTION Organics product Kristen mentioned above: http://www.revolutionorganics.com/products.php?action=dspProduct&productID=563&categoryID=31
Question:  do you have recommendations for lighten some sun spots? I have some under my eyes, and none of serum (natural or not) works.
Kristen Arnett's Answer: yes you are kind of reiterating a point I made earlier about acne scars. It's really tough to find skin care that is both totally natural and will lighten those pigmentation areas effectively. Actually as you get older those spots get darker...so what the natural brands can do for you is keep things at bay and protect you from them getting worse. I've done a lot of sun damage in my youth, but I actively prevent it from showing up on my face now and if I accidentally get too much sun - those spots come right out.

Kristen Arnett's Closing:
Alright I'm going to have to sign off soon ladies, but I will give you some final words of advice that may apply to everyone:
1) Your makeup will only look good if your skin looks good
2) Your skin only looks good if your body is healthy
3) Your body is only going to be healthy if you care for it and you believe you are worth that kind of care (which YOU ARE!). So for more tips from experts on all of these points, please keep up with us at http://GreenBeautyTeam.com Green Beauty Team — Experts Inspiring Conscious Beauty

I will apparently be answering some additional questions in a recap article, and I invite all of you to keep in conversation with me (and the team) at EcoSalon, Organic Authority, Green Beauty Team... It's been a pleasure to chat with you all!! Happy Earth Day!!

Baby Shower Gift Sewing Projects

I am not affiliated with this company. I purchased everything used in these projects myself. My opinion is completely honest no matter how I receive any items mentioned on this blog.

My good friend is having her 2nd baby.  This time it is a girl.  I opted to be more creative this time and made a few gifts to go along with the items I purchased for the baby shower.  I wanted to share my sewing projects with you.

First, I made a Hello Kitty tag blanket.  I picked the colors pink and brown and then selected 3 ribbons to make the tags and pink and brown minky dimple dot fabric. It must have been in the back of my mind that she registered for brown and pink wall decals for the nursery.  I was so happy it all coordinated nicely.

I did all of my shopping at Joann's.  I used a pattern idea that I found on Pinterest. The pattern comes from domesticcharm.blogspot.com  I did almost everything stated there except I made the blankie a half yard rectangle instead of a square.  I found this quite easy to sew and I was really happy with how it turned out.  I actually had to tell them that I sewed it!

Here is a pic of how my tag blanket turned out:

Next, I wanted to make baby outfits for the little fashionista on the way.  I have a dress pattern but that will be a welcome to the world gift since I didn't get it done in time.  I did however find this awesome pattern to make baby circle skirts on Pinterest.  It is from danamadeit.com  I bought 3 fat quarters from the quilting section and some soft colorful elastic that coordinated with all 3 fabrics.  That is it aside from thread.  That is all you need.

I followed the directions on danamadeit.com and used her printable pattern.  I think the skirts turned out adorable and many at the baby shower commented that they wanted them for themselves.  There is a non-baby pattern and post on the same site so I may try it out for myself and see how it turns out.  For now though, these baby skirts are awesome!

Here is a pic of how my baby circle skirts turned out:

Gabriel Lip Primer

I am not affiliated with this company. This item was sent to me for review purposes only. My opinion is completely honest no matter how I receive any items mentioned on this blog.

Another new product from Gabriel Cosmetics that I got to try out is their new Lip Primer.  Since natural lipsticks and glosses don't last as long as other mainstream lippies, this was interesting to test out.

I applied it with my finger and accidentally found another use for this item.  You don't want to apply too much because it can blend with your lip product instead of just acting as a primer.  If you have a lippie that is too dark or too bold for you, then I suggest you try it out to help mute the color to make it more wearable.

So how about as a primer?  I applied a lot less of the product with my fingertip so it looked like a very faint amount of powder was on my lips.  You do not want to see any opaque primer, just a thin sheer layer.  It should feel dry to the touch.  Then you apply your lip product.  As a lip primer, I am impressed.  I applied a lipstick at 9am, kissed my boyfriend goodbye, went to work, ate a snack and my day continued on and I still had lipstick on well past 12:30-1pm.  This is a natural lipstick lasting well over 3-4 hours, depending on the shade. This makes for a lot less reapplication of your natural lip product throughout the day. I tried it with a Gabriel lipstick and other natural brands of lipstick and it successfully worked with them all as long as I didn't apply too much of the primer.

This primer retails for $13.55.  It is gluten free and vegan, animal friendly and eco-friendly.   My only issue is that it looks fairly similar to the eye primer so I need to keep them apart to make sure I don't grab the wrong one.

My New Ombre Haircolor & Cut

I am not affiliated with this company. I paid for this hairtreatment myself. My opinion is completely honest no matter how I receive any items mentioned on this blog.

I decided that I wanted to do something different with my hair.  With naturally curly hair, there isn't a lot to do that is different aside from cutting it, growing it out or straightening it.  I decided I wanted and needed a haircut.  My hair was getting a bit droopy and started to have a lot of knots.  I knew I wanted to do something else though.  I don't want to chemically straighten my hair because I love my curls. I prefer to just blow my hair out or use a fat curling iron to smooth my hair out for a day or two instead.

I decided that I love so many of those pics of ombre haircolor online so it was time to give it a try.  While I love how it looks with funky purple shades, I opted for something a bit more natural.  I wear bright funky colors and don't want to change my wardrobe because of a haircolor change.  I also enjoy funky bold jewelry and makeup sometimes so there was another reason to stick with more natural tones.

I messaged my stylist to ask what would be involved.  She told me to send her some pics of what I like and said it was doable and my pics were great so I made my appointment. Yesterday morning I headed to my regular salon.  We started with a discussion about what colors and shades I wanted.  I looked over the swatches and we decided on a shade range.  My hair was then done in phases.  I warned her ahead of time that I planned to take at least 2 inches off the length of my hair so she cut that off first so it wouldn't be in the way. Better to cut it off first so she doesn't do the lightest shade and then need to cut it off.

After that, she did an overall haircolor from roots to ends.  I think she might have done 2 shades for that.  We chose a shade one level darker than my natural color for the base.  I sat and waited for it to process.
You can see a pic on my Instagram page here: Hair Color Phase 1

Next, she put some highlight streaks in and some lighter color with foils to start the ombre process.  I sat and processed some more. You can see a pic on my Instagram page here: Hair Color Phase 2

After a while, she added yet another level of lightening to my hair.  More sitting and waiting.  Good thing I figured this would take a long time.  You can see a pic on my Instagram page here: Hair Color Phase 3

Finally my hair was rinsed and she wanted it to have more gradation of color so she added some more lightener to the tips of my hair.  I sat and waited at the sink for another 5 minutes or so.  I didn't have my iPad with me at the sink so no pics of Phase 4.

She rinsed and conditioned my hair.  Then finished off the cut with some layers.  She dried my hair with a diffuser and gave my curls some oomph with a tiny curling iron since she knew I was headed to a baby shower afterwards and wanted to look nice.

I have to say that I am really happy with my hair.  The length feels great, so light and bouncy.  The color is fun and different.  It is exactly what I wanted.

Here are some before and after pics and a great pic of the back of my haircolor taken at the salon.

A pic of me right after I left the salon on Instagram: After hair pic

Before on left taken the night before with no makeup, After pic on right taken last night after I got home, wearing Bare Minerals

Great pic of the back of my hair that really shows the ombre effect.  Thanks to my stylist for taking the pic and sharing it on Facebook!

Gabriel Eye Primer - Pics & Review

I am not affiliated with this company. This item was sent to me for review purposes only. My opinion is completely honest no matter how I receive any items mentioned on this blog.

Gabriel Cosmetics sent me their brand spanking new Eye Primer to test out.  I am kind of glad I was delayed in my review post because of not feeling well because I packed this to take on my trip to Washington D.C.  That means that I was able to test this out in multiple weather types, including 90 degree heat!

I have to say, this eye primer was a huge surprise.  It worked great with every single type of eyeshadow and liner I wore with it, except for one.  The one eyeshadow that it didn't work great with was one that is somewhat greasy and tends to crease very obviously on my lids.  I thought it was worth a shot.  While this primer is amazing with 95% of my shadows, this one wasn't successful but I rarely wear it anyway so I guess it all works out.

I applied my foundation as normal and then applied this primer with my fingertip.  I blended it across my eyelid, up towards my brow and made sure it went down to my lashes.  Though it looks like a cream in the post, it applies pretty dry so you don't have to wait for it to dry.  After that, just apply your eye make up as you normally would.

No matter the weather, the temperature, the activity level, this eye primer kept my eye makeup looking fresh and lasting long.  I am impressed!!! I now use this as my go to eye primer.  I am happy that is retails for an affordable $13.55

I am back! My Top 10 from my trip to Washington D.C.

I am not affiliated with this company. I purchased all items discussed here myself. My opinion is completely honest no matter how I receive any items mentioned on this blog.

I am sorry that I have been missing for a while but no worries, I am still here.  I wasn't feeling well so that put things on hold.  Then I had to go out of town to Washington D.C. for work and that put things on hold a bit longer.  I am happy to be back, photos are uploaded and I am ready to get blogging.  Since I have been away for a while, you get 2 posts today instead of just 1!

This post is all about my fave places that I visited in Washington D.C.  I hope you enjoy it!

My Washington D.C. Top 10:

1. Smithsonian's National Zoo
Free admission. Giant Panda bears. Need I say more???  I was so close to a panda bear I was giddy for the rest of the day LOL

2.   National Gallery of Art
Free admission again! Amazing artwork ranging from DaVinci to Warhol! Since it was 90 degrees the day I went, I also loved the fountain in the Sculpture Garden.  No wading allowed but they let us all dip out toes in.

3.  Library of Congress
Well, I am a librarian but this building is for everyone.  Yet another free thing to see and do in D.C.  The interior of the building is gorgeous and it is full of history.  You can also take a guided tour on an hourly basis.

4. The Tidal Basin during Cherry Blossom Season
It was really crowded on the weekend but during the week it wasn't so bad.  If you aren't up for all the walking, take one of the trolley tours around town, they will drive you around the whole tidal basin and stop to let you off if you want to.  It is simply beautiful.

5. Sticky Fingers Sweets & Eats
Awesome vegan bakery.  I had to go here and sample a bunch of cupcakes.  They are so delicious, you would never know they were vegan.

6.  Red Velvet Cupcakery
They have 2 vegan options and they were delicious! I love the decor theme and the cupcakes.  Plus they were really friendly and it was only a few blocks from my Trolley Tour stop.

7. Pitango Gelato
The gelato is suppose to be amazing but I enjoyed the vegan sorbet.  Nothing to upset my stomach and so creamy and refreshing.  I am now obsessed with finding good sorbet at home.

8.  Looped Yarn Works
Do you crochet or knit or just love to pet the pretty soft yarn?  Check this shop out.  It was beautiful and I was happy to pick up some locally dyed yarns for my stash.  I am still in the beginner stages of knitting but I don't care, I want yarn! The people are incredibly friendly too. Feel free to chat or ask questions.

9. Bistrot Du Coin
Oh la la.  I had trouble not ordering things in French even though I only took it in high school.  I loved the food and the atmosphere here.  I had my last cocktail and meal in D.C. here, Poulet rĂ´ti au four and Bisou de Paris.

10.  Lebanese Taverna
I have grown to love some of the food from my Lebanese heritage so I was so happy to find this place near the Zoo on my walk.  I had an amazing lunch there.  They bring fresh warm pita to the table with a dipping oil that I think has zataar seasoning in it.  I am so going to try that at home!  I had some yummy kafta kebabs for lunch.
