A Coconut Oil Experiment

I am not affiliated with this company. I purchased this product on my own. My opinion is completely honest no matter how I receive any items mentioned on this blog.

I have been taking a Health Flow Unleash eCourse with Laura Koniver, the Intuition Physician This is an online class on health that is all online.  She sends you  daily readings and assignments and so far the course has been great for me.  I highly recommend her newsletter or following her on facebook if you are interested in a more intuitive approach to health & wellness.

On Friday, she sent our weekend assignment and it was to step back and take a break from things like supplements, creams, lotions, makeup, etc to just let our natural health and well being shine through and do its thing.

Even though I am a natural beauty blogger, I do enjoy a nice day off from makeup and the constant maintenance.  My skin enjoys a chance to just be and breathe.  I took this opportunity as a chance to test out using Coconut Oil as my moisturizer.  I used Spectrum Organic Refined Coconut Oil for this. I started out with a nice Aztec Secret Healing Clay Mask and then massaged some coconut oil into my face.  I have to say, I was surprised by how well it absorbed into my skin.

I continued on naked faced for the rest of the day Saturday, Sunday and Monday.  I had to work from home on Sunday so that is always a perfect time for to go naked.  Monday, I applied coconut oil to my face and then *gasp* I went out for the day.  Yes, I went in public with no makeup on aside from a tinted lip balm. I still cleansed in the morning and at night.  I followed up with coconut oil application.  My pillow didn't get all greasy, my face didn't break out, I didn't feel icky.  On the contrary, my face looked great! I felt good in my own skin.  A dry patch on my chin healed and balanced out. I know some people use coconut oil as their cleanser.  I have yet to try it as more than a moisturizer.

I have to say that this was quite successful and now that I am back to my normal routine, I almost miss it.  I am going to need to work coconut oil into my routine more often.  It is also extremely healthy to cook with so I suggest you get one for the bathroom and one for the kitchen!

If you want to learn more about coconut oil, there is plenty of info out there that will help.  Here are some resources:

Jessicurl Hair Pics & Don't miss the Giveaway

I am not affiliated with this company. These items were sent to me for review & giveaway purposes only. My opinion is completely honest no matter how I receive any items mentioned on this blog.

One thing that was missing from my Update on Jessicurl post was pics of my hair.  We had a big snowstorm on the day I posted that and I got drenched to a point that my hair and I needed the rest of the day off so sadly I couldn't take any pics.  Now my hair and I have recovered so I wanted to post some pics of my hair after using Jessicurl as described here: http://www.beautyaunatural.com/2013/03/jessicurlgiveaway.html

You rarely get to see my hair in full curl since I normally take my makeup look photos in the morning before I leave for work and I air dry my hair so it usually isn't dry for quite a while after those pics are taken. Luckily, it is a nice sunny day at my office so I snapped a few pics.

Don't forget to visit the link above to enter to win an $88 value set of Jessicurl hair products for curly or wavy hair.   There is just a little over 4 days left to enter to win!

Jessicurl Update and Light & Luminous Collection Giveaway

I am not affiliated with this company. These items were sent to me for review & giveaway purposes only. My opinion is completely honest no matter how I receive any items mentioned on this blog.

For the first day of spring, what is more appropriate than writing about products for my springy curly hair? LOL In August I decided to try out Jessicurl while I was on the hunt for decent curly hair products that were natural.  I picked up their trial/travel size Light & Luminous Collection which is intended for fine, wavy and curly hair that gets weighed down easily.  I have to say that I was impressed and wanted to post an update since I have been consistently using the Jessicurl products for a while now.  You can see my original post and before and after pics here: http://www.beautyaunatural.com/2012/08/jessicurl-you-have-right-to-remain-curly.html

***I have a coupon code to share with my readers too! The coupon code is BANMJ20 and is good for 20% off any order at Jessicurl.com through April 30th, 2013. ***

(hint hint - scroll down to the bottom for the giveaway)

I am loving Jessicurl! I bought all of the items from this collection in full-size when I posted my original write up in August.  Since then I have ordered plenty more. I go through the Aloeba Daily conditioner, Gelebration Spray and Confident Coils Styling Solution pretty quickly.  My hair loves them and drinks them right up so I am glad to be using such high quality ingredients on my hair.  While my hair is fine and naturally curly, it can be hard to manage. If I don't use enough product, it can get too lightweight and fluff and fly around like baby hair, if I use too much product it can get weighed down and flat.

Right now my hair routine is to alternate between Jessicurl Gentle Lather Shampoo and a Nature's Gate Lemongrass and Clary Sage Volumizing Shampoo (if only because I still have more of the Nature's Gate Shampoo to use up). I use the Jessicurl Aloeba Daily Conditioner 6 days per week and the TooShea! Extra-Moisturizing Conditioner once per week.  In the coldest winter months I switched it up and used TooShea! twice per week.  Your hair should be really wet when applying the Jessicurl styling products and you shouldn't towel dry your hair unless it is microfiber.  I don't bother with that and just squeeze any excess water that is too much and dripping down my back so my hair is still wet but not soaking through the shirt I put on.  From there, I flip my hair upside-down and spray Gelebration Spray in my hair and scrunch.  I then flip my hair back upright and spray some Gelebration Spray into the palm of my hand and flip my hair over and do a second round of scrunching.  From there, I use a small amount of Confident Coils Styling Solution, like the size of a dime-nickel, and rub it on the palms of my hands.  I then flip my hair over a third time and scrunch this into my hair.  From there, I check the mirror, make sure I didn't miss scrunching any spots and I air dry unless I have a special occasion when I would use a diffuser.

The Awe Inspiraling Spray is a product re-activator so if you feel your hair fizzle, go to the gym, get stuck out in humidity, put your hair up and take it back down, or want to skip washing and redo your hair quickly the next day, that is the item you use to re-activate the Jessicurl products.  I don't use it often but it does work great.

My hair has bounce, looks full and healthy and has great shine.  I do need to keep up with trims to keep my layers at good lengths to maintain some oomph in my hair.  The combo of a great stylist who knows my hair and cuts it well along with the Jessicurl products has been key in my moving my haircare into natural products. I have to say, this was the hardest thing to switch over to natural and I am so happy that I finally found Jessicurl.

You can find Jessicurl at www.jessicurl.com  Check out their Store Location to see if you can find it at a location near you.  Personally, I order all of my Jessicurl online.

Now you can enter to win Jessicurl products! I was sent a full-size set of the Light & Luminous Collection in Citrus Lavender to giveaway to a lucky reader.  I asked about their scents and was told that the Citrus lavender scent is all natural and made from essential oils, not chemical fragrance.

The full-size Light & Luminous Collection is 6-8oz products and retails for $88 at  http://store.jessicurl.com/product-p/sl-3.htm
Prize will be packaged as shown here.

Items pictured are the actual prize in the giveaway listed below!!!

I am giving away 1 full-size Jessicurl Light & Luminous Collection to a lucky reader who enters below in the Rafflecopter app.  Please note the rules. US residents only please.

Ilia Beauty Lipstick in Ink Pot

One of the Ilia Beauty lipsticks that I picked up when I got their mascara was Ink Pot.  It is a newer shade of deep purple.  I am a purple girl so I needed to give this a try.  It is a bold shade but as I said when I bought it, "I can handle it."

Ilia Beauty lipsticks are, in my opinion, high end natural lipsticks.  They feel amazing on, look amazing and leave your lips feeling and looking great.  The colors are fabulous too.  Ink Pot will make you say wow.  I tend to wear this color a lot and love it so I like to wear it with a very subtle eye look.  If you like bright bold color, you need to check this shade out.  Another option though, if it is a little too much for you, would be to blot it and lighten it with another shade or a lipgloss.

This shade is limited edition and retails for $24.  You can find it at Ilia Beauty or Spirit Beauty Lounge online.  I picked mine up at a local boutique that sells Ilia Beauty products.

Please note the LOL moment I had when I realized what color I was wearing when I took these pics!

LOL! I looked down when taking the pics and couldn't believe the color I was wearing.

Info from the Ilia Beauty Website

Its name is reflective of its color. A violent, violet hue that leans itself away from the rest, standing out on its own as a bold, unique shade. Ink Pot is for those who like to take a risk and benefit from its rush.
Limited Edition
ILIA Lipstick combines organic ingredients with contemporary colors that can be layered to create your own personalized shade.

Eco Tools Fresh & Flawless 5 Piece Complexion Set

I was so excited when Eco Tools posted pics of their new stuff coming out that I was counting down until I could buy some of them.  Lucky for me, I needed a week 1 of eating better reward and Eco Tools had a 35% off makeup brushes coupon code for Valentine's Day.

One of the new brush items that I had to pick up was the Fresh & Flawless 5 piece complexion set.  This travel sized brush set is great for travel or everyday use.  The brushes are beautifully designed and that super soft synthetic feel you are used to from Eco Tools.  The case they come in is like a little book, maybe it is the librarian in me, but I think that is adorable.

You get 5 brushes in the set; a flat concealer brush, a buffing concealer brush, a precision foundation brush, a complexion blending brush and a full powder brush.  You get all 5 of these great brushes for $14.99.

These brushes work great with my Bare Minerals face basics like original foundation, bisque and mineral veil.  They make a great addition to your routine if you want to really get in there for a finished well concealed look or can be used on their own for an overall look.  I used them along with the brushes I normally use and they complimented them well.

I used the precision foundation brush to apply foundation where I needed more coverage after applying my overall foundation.  I then applied Bisque as concealer with the flat concealer brush.  After that, I buffed the concealer out with the buffing concealer brush and buffed the foundation out with the complexion blending brush. After all of that, I applied Mineral Veil with the Full Powder brush.  This made for a really flawless face look.  If you like more coverage from your makeup or have a special event to be a little extra concealed and more finished looking for, these brushes are great.  Take them when you travel, add them to your daily routine, keep them in your purse or makeup bag for touch ups.  This is a great brush set, super cute and a price you can't beat.
