My Intentions for 2013

This year I am going to have intentions instead of resolutions.

A quote from healing.about.com:
"A working definition for intention is: “to have in mind a purpose or plan, to direct the mind, to aim.” Lacking intention, we sometimes stray without meaning or direction. But with it, all the forces of the universe can align to make even the most impossible, possible."

Doesn't that sound nicer than a resolution.  A resolution is defined as a firm decision to do or not do something.  Very cut and dry, very specific, lots of pressure on yourself, lots of chances to feel stressed or disappointed.  Who wants to start the new year with that?  Not me!  No more pressure of I will lose X pounds by such and such date, I will pay off this much on my credit cards, I will be a size X, I will stop eating Y & Z.

My intentions for 2013 are somewhat general but that is how I want them.  These general intentions are important to me but by giving myself some freedom and leeway with them, I am much more likely to accomplish these.

Here is my list:
  • Be Creative!
    • This can include painting, drawing, dancing, singing, sewing, knitting, baking, cooking, doing crafts, making DIY items for home, etc.
  • Be Active!
    • Take a walk, dance around the house to music, do a workout, hop on the exercise bike, do yoga, get up and stretch, get outside, etc.
  • Learn & Try New Things!
    • Listen to CDs to learn a language, read, watch instructional videos, take a class or lesson, try new recipes, taste new foods, etc
  • Love myself more!
    • This may sound silly or self-helpy but it is very important.  If you are anything like me, you are your own worst enemy. I am full of negative judgmental self-talk and constantly do more for others than myself.  I need to change this and know that I can.  I need to tell myself positive things about myself, be my own cheerleader and believe I can do it.
How about you?  Do you have any intentions or resolutions for the New year?

  1. Happy New Year! This year I am Counting By 12s. I've joined a group of amazing women who are all trying to do 12 things each month that will take them out of their comfort zone, focus on themselves, and try new things. Everyone is doing something different, but the support I'm already receiving from these women is awesome (we're only 2 days in as I post this comment). Please check out http://countingby12s.com/

  2. I think that's great! Seems like resolutions are just a way to set myself up for failure. But intentions are more likely to be upheld. I totally agree with everything on your list for myself - except for "be creative". There's not a creative bone in my body. I've tried. Numerous times. Just not creative! As far as loving yourself more - I think most of us need that. I am horribly negative towards myself and have to work really hard to not give in to negative thinking. For me, I need to focus on accepting myself as I am and stop thinking I'm a failure for not being a size 6.
    Thanks for the inspiration!
