Mineral Makeup Nirvana - It Continues and Continues

I haven't posted an update on this for quite some time, since April in fact.  Yikes!   I am still on a mission to wear each of my mineral makeup eyeshadows and liners without repeats, AKA Nirvana!  Why should I own all these colors if I am not wearing them?  As I wear colors, I flip the jar over.  A few years ago, I did this without letting myself shop and it was so much easier.  When your collection keeps growing as you try to wear colors, it takes a bit longer.  It also takes more time when your work schedule changed to normal earlier hours so you don't have all that extra time before work anymore to get ready.  There are days that, *gasp* I go to work barefaced if I am running late enough.  I never thought I would see the day.  I am trying to get into more of a routine and do try to wear full makeup as often as I can.

Here is my status report:

I still have 128 Bare Escentuals eyecolors to wear (this includes samples, if it is a color in a jar, I have to wear it).
Then I have 66 eyecolors from other mineral makeup brands like Alima Pure, Pure Luxe, The She Space and more.
That leaves a grand total of 194 eyecolors to wear.

If I wear 4 colors on my eyes per day, I could be done in 49 days.
If I wear 3 colors on my eyes per day, I could be done in 65 days.

This is finally looking doable.  I am not doing any shopping right now due to a very tight budget so I am hoping to wear all of these before the New Year so I can do some after Christmas makeup shopping as a reward!

Patterns I have noticed:

I wear neutrals, browns, grays, purples, greens and highlight colors ALL the time.  I am close to through all of them. The colors I need to wear are pinks, reds, oranges, golds, yellows, coppers and blues.

SULA Beauty Purple Passion Lip Gloss

A brand I decided to try out a few items from was SULA Beauty.  SULA is a fun, flirty line that is free of parabens, phthalates, and petroleum byproducts.  I found them on Hautelook and then picked up a couple more things at Ulta to try out.

I made sure to pick up one of their lip glosses.  I picked Purple Passion since I love a good purple and this shade is harder to come by in natural formulas.  I really like the look and feel of the gloss.  It isn't too sticky, it smells great and doesn't taste icky.  It feels more smooth on and my lips feel soft when I wear it. Another plus, these are affordable.  The gloss retails for $9. I think this is a great line for all of us but also a good way to get teens hooked on more natural products for a little less cost.

Badger Balm Seabuckthorn Hair Oil For All Hair Types

My apologies for how long it took to post this review.  Naughty beauty blogger, naughty!  I want to introduce you to the new hair oil line from Badger Balm.  They have 3 wonderful hair oils and I got to try out the Seabuckthorn Hair Oil for All Hair types.  I actually got to see this in development mode when I visited Badger this summer and then they sent me a sample of the new product once it was released.

I decided to test this out by doing a pre-shower hair treatment.  I ran the oil through my hair and massaged it into my scalp.  Then I put my hair up with a clip and let the oil do the work while I went about my business in my PJs.  I left it in for over an hour and then took my shower as usual.  I shampooed the oil out of my hair and it all came out.  My hair didn't feel all greasy or like I needed to keep shampooing to get the oily feeling to go.  My hair seemed healthier, shinier and fuller after using this oil.  I just need to figure out a weekly hair oil routine.

I think this is great to help treat my highlights since they can get a bit dry.  It is also important to maintain the health of your scalp to maintain healthy happy hair.  This oil does all that.  I highly recommend this for any hair type.  My hair is pretty healthy, curly and very fine so I prefer not to do a treatment too often but if you have thicker hair, damaged hair or hair that needs that extra oomph, do a treatment more often as needed.  It is great for all hair types, you just need to figure out how often works best for you.  This also makes a great overnight treatment.  Personally, I don't do well with anything in my hair and can't even sleep with my hair down at night so I opted to do a daytime treatment on clean dry hair instead.  It works well either way, whatever you prefer!

This retails for $18.99 for a 2 oz bottle.  Here are some pics of my adorable sample bottle:

Well, isn't that pinteresting?

Wait a second, I think you had a typo there Heather?  You meant to type interesting, right?  No, I meant pinteresting.  Are you on Pinterest?  Are you one of the many addicted to pinning to boards, collecting everything from recipes to craft ideas to favorites blogs and books to grouping things by color.  Pretty much anything with an image on the world wide web can be "pinned" into a pinterest board.  Not only can you collect from the web but you can repin items from other users' boards.  You can follow friends.  You can follow your fave companies.  You can follow certain boards or all of them or none.  It is all up to you.
image from Pinterest.com

For example, lots of my friends are parents so they collect tons of ideas of things to do for or with their kids.  I don't have kids and there are no immediate plans to have kids so I follow my friends boards but opt to go into their page and unfollow the ones about kids since I don't need to see all of those as they don't interest me right now.  I can always go back and follow them again if I change my mind.

I have been on Pinterest for a really long time but it had a big boom this past year.  If you are on Pinterest but aren't sure what to do with it or if you  have heard of it but didn't dare join, I wanted to post this for you.  I am at a point of considering myself a Pinterest veteran.

For example, you can look at my boards.  I have collected things related to beauty, pics from my blog, tons of recipes, cleaning and organizing tips, arts and crafts ideas and more.  There are also a lot of contests on Pinterest.  You will see some of those boards on my Pinterest page too.

Let me stop for a minute, if you don't use Pinterest much, you might not know what these words mean.  Here you go:

Pinterest: the website social network that lets you collect images that link to webpages.

Boards: You create boards to collect your images by grouping them in themed areas.

Pins: Each individual item that you add to your board is called a pin.

Pinning: the act of adding an image to your board.

Here is a great help section from Pinterest with lots of answers to your questions: http://pinterest.com/about/help/

One of the most important things about Pinterest is the Pin It button. This is a button you can click while on a webpage and it will show you all the images from that webpage. You select the image you want and fill out a description and then add the pin. Tadah, this webpage and image are now pinned on your board!  This can easily be installed on your web browser by following the directions here: http://pinterest.com/about/goodies/

So how about it?  Are you interested in Pinterest now?  I must warn you, it can be addictive but it is a great way to collect ideas for anything from a dream home to a wedding to a dinner party to house cleaning.

Changes, Adding Depth, Bumping It Up a Notch

I posted on Facebook and Twitter to see if anyone would be interested if I started to add more to my blog than just beauty info.  So far I have had only positive responses.  I would like to keep doing what I am doing but also add things about health and wellness, life and my personal journey.  Don't worry, I will keep blogging about natural and low-chemical beauty products and makeup but I want to bump things up to a new level.  I see this as a way to keep blogging about what I blog about but adding more depth to it.

On occasion, I write about something different like a trip I took, a concert I attended, my experience with acupuncture, my elimination diet, etc.  I would like to do more of that along with writing about new beauty product discoveries, trying at home recipes for natural beauty products, and posting makeup looks.

I've been blogging about beauty for well over 3 years now and I noticed I was starting to get in a rut.  I have to admit, I almost considered quitting a few times.  I think that instead of quitting, I need to revamp and refocus and find a way to make this blog fun for me again.  Beauty is about a lot more than just beauty products. Our lives make us beautiful! Things we love to do make us beautiful! Seeking health and wellness makes us beautiful!

Stay tuned for some minor changes and what I hope will be new additions of interest to you.  Again, I don't want you to worry, I still enjoy makeup and beauty products as much as I always have so they will still be a big part of this blog.

Some things I also plan to write about now:
  • Art & Creativity - trying to get my art mojo back in action, painting, drawing, making, doing, seeing art!
  • Weight & Body Image - oh the trials and tribulations of being a female in this day and age, how hard we are on ourselves, how hard it is to figure out what way of eating is right for us as we are all different, how I am dealing, what am I doing or trying.
  • Natural Healing and Alternative Medicine - Acupuncture, Yoga, Meditation, Chinese Medicine, Ayurveda, Massage, Herbs & Vitamins, Going Green, Going Organic, Eating Local, Food allergies & reactions...and more.  What interests me, what do I try and life, what doesn't work for me, what sounds interesting, what I am reading about.
  • DIY - Make your own safer, healthier, handmade beauty products, cleaning products, methods for organizing, how to squeeze 2 people with lots of stuff into a tiny apartment, etc.
  • Money - How to live and shop on a budget, ways to save money, sales, bargain hunting, ways to make some extra dough$$$
  • Beauty, Life & Love - things that move me, things I think about, things I want to share with you, beautiful pictures, scenes, moments, great websites, great places, things to listen to, capturing a moment in time, etc.
  • Life - Seeking wellness, happiness, spirituality and my ultimate true self in the midst of reality, life and the messes and obstacles we often face.

Simple Minded Bath Company

If you are like me, you love a luxurious bath, full of yummy smelling bath products that make your skin feel great.  Well, I had been using a lot of Lush items but they were not as natural as I would like.  I still have some of them to get through before I am officially done but I am increasing my use of natural bath products and am happy to report that I found a really good one on Etsy, Simple Minded Bath Company.

The product smell great, the add color to your bath, they come wrapped like a fabulous present, full of confetti and ribbons.  The smell isn't as strong as Lush or other mainstream bath items because it is natural and natural tends to not be as strong.  My skin is happy with these products.

The items I purchased: Sugar Mama Sugar Cubes, Luxurious Lotion Bar in Strawberry Cupcake, Strawberry Cupcake Luxury Bath Bomb, and a Space Cadet Luxurious Bath Bomb.  I received all these items as well as some fun samples of other products.

This is a great fun way to get natural bath products that are still colorful and delicious scented.  These make a great gift for a friend or for yourself!  You need to be careful with this sort of thing as just because something is homemade or handmade, doesn't mean it is natural.  Though, these days, just because something says natural, you can't believe that it is natural without reading the ingredients list.  These, I am happy to say, are natural!

Natural Products For The Guy(s) In Your Life

If you live with a male, whether it be your hubby, your boyfriend, your brother, your father, your son or a friend, they need to use a lot of face and body products too.  Their products are full as just as much junk as ours so it is good for them to use natural or low-chemical alternatives whenever possible.

I live with my boyfriend of almost 6 years and he has gradually started using more and more natural products.  Here are some of the items he uses, has used or that I bought for myself and realized he had started using it too.

Giovannia Haircare - Shampoo and Conditioner
This is something we had picked up a Target and he used it for quite some time.  I am pretty sure we are still stocked up on quite a few of these.  They aren't all pretty looking package-wise and the scents aren't too girly so these are great for guys or gals.

Aubrey Organics - GPB Shampoo & Conditioner
These I ordered online though I have seen them in a local natural store.  This was especially good for his course curly hair and yet again, not too girly scented and the packaging isn't all foofoo.

Burt's Bees - Beeswax Lip Balm in a tube

Basic, simple, works well and not too girly or scented.  This is a good one for everyone!

Burt's Bees - Soap Bark and Chamomile Deep Cleansing Cream
This is a good one.  I just had it in the shower and he started using it.  Guys need to cleanse just as much as we do.  They don't wear makeup (not usually anyway) but their skin still gets oily and exposed to the environment so they need a good deep cleanse.  Not too girly scented and gives a really nice tingle of refreshing clean.

Burt's Bees - Fabulously Fresh Body Wash (AKA Rosemary Mint)
This one is another refreshing mint product, not too girly, though now it is called Fabulously, at least the packaging is pretty neutral otherwise.

mōksa Organics - Iceland Mint Soap
Yet another product I left in the shower and he mentioned he had tried out.  I think mint is a scent guys don't mind, at least unless they detest mint scent in general.  If I leave something minty in the shower, he seems to try it out.

Yes to Cucumbers - Facial Towelettes
First off, we don't call them towelettes, we call them wipes LOL Secondly, this is another mild scent, nothing too foofoo.  He doesn't want to fully cleanse his face at night but he will use these so why not keep them in the bathroom.

Indie Lee - Blemish Stick
This is a great one.  Guys dislike breaking out just as much as we do so why not have a blemish treatment that is easy, basic and clear!

Badger Balm - SPF 35 Sport Sunscreen (or any other sunscreen they make)
This is now the only brand of sunscreen we really use.  We are both pretty fair, though he is actually more fair than I am.  He used to use the scented formula which can be a bit strong scented so the unscented or Sport version are really great for both of us to use.

Badger Balm - Sleep Balm
There was an enormous dent in this before I even got around to trying this out.  Guys need their Zzzz's just as much as we do.  Why don't we all just wear a little sleep balm to help calm our minds before bed.  Don't go to bed mad or stressed or racing with thoughts of what you need to do!

There are also some great natural lines out there for guys.

Check out Everyman Jack http://everymanjack.com/   and
Burt's Bees Natural Skincare for Men http://www.burtsbees.com/other/gifts-him/

What about you?  Do you have any great natural product suggestions for guys?

Florence & The Machine Fall 2012 Ceremonials Tour

When I saw that Florence and the Machine was coming to my area I freaked out.  Luckily, my boyfriend was able to get some tickets pre-sale because the seats for the show cold out extremely quickly.  Eventually they opened up lawn seating but this is a show I needed seats for, not that we ever sat in them.

Yesterday was finally the day, September 16, 2012 at SPAC in Saratoga Springs, NY.  The t-shirt I wanted didn't come in my size, oh well, I will live.  I believe that was the only disappointment aside from wanting to hear more songs and for the show to last longer.  We had decent aisle seats which was great.  When you are short as me, an aisle seat is a blessing because you can lean or stand in the aisle a bit to see without trying to see over the taller people in front of you LOL

The opening act was the Maccabees who are pretty popular in the UK from what I understand.  Their music is a lot of fun though the bass was so loud I was really wishing we had found some low decibel earplugs before the show.  Oh well, my ears should be fine. The music was still a lot of fun to bop around to and enjoy before Florence appeared.

Florence has an undeniable energy and playfulness that is intoxicating.  Her voice is as pure and amazing as you expect but so powerful.  She truly loves and appreciates her fans.  She is far from jaded and you can see in her performance that she loves what she does.  I have to say,  I did not expect her to be as energized as she was and when I say energized, I mean like a gazelle powered by lithium batteries.   She jumps, she runs, she dances, she sings, she sways, she climbs, she gets down in the crowd and runs a lap of the entire amphitheater.  She does this all in a long flowing dress. Not only that, she does all this and can keep on singing!  There is a reason her previous album was called Lungs because she has some lungs, some of the most powerful ones I have ever seen.

The crowd was all types and ages. Everyone from young kids to gray-haired folks, hipsters to geeks, the crowd was packed with them all, happy and enjoying the show together.  It was an amazing experience and felt almost surreal.

She loves to get the crowd involved.  She asks you to help sing songs, she asks you to offer your loved one as a sacrifice by lifting them up on your shoulders before she starts singing Rabbit Heart (Raise it Up), she insists that no one sits down, and she makes everyone jump during Dog Days Are Over. She accepts a teddy bear and a t-shirt from the audience with complete graciousness and love.  The teddy bear even got to dance with her and got a kiss before sitting by the piano.

She seemed to love the energy as much as we loved her and said she would see us soon so I am hopeful that she plans to return to this venue or another one in our area.  This is a show not to be missed!

If she does come back to town, I really hope she plays our song since my boyfriend and I would really love to hear it live.
Our song - "You've Got The Love"

Some of my favorites pics I took at the show:

Juice Beauty SPF 30 Tinted Mineral Moisturizer - Sand

This summer I had been using my 100% Pure Tinted Moisturizer and ran out.  My product in my shade or any shade close to mine was out of stock so what was I to do .  I remembered seeing rave reviews of the Juice Beauty SPF 30 Tinted Mineral Moisturizer in Sand.  Lucky for me, as I neared the bottom of my other moisturizer, Juice Beauty sent out an email with info on a special and saying that Sand was back in stock so I went for it.  It won a Delicious Living Beauty & Body Award for 2011.

I've been wearing this daily as my daytime moisturizer.  I don't wear any makeup primer right now and it seems to do well.  My face gets a really nice healthy glow when I wear this.  It isn't so dark that it shows up as not matching my skin like other tinted moisturizers I have tried, it really blends right in.  My only complaint is the scent.  It just isn't my thing, it isn't strong and it isn't artificial.  I can say I am growing more used to it so it doesn't bother me as much as it used to.   It is a great multi-tasker and my skin looks great with it on, with or without makeup over it.

Vegan Cuts Mōksa Organics Bar Soaps

Vegan Cuts sent me some Mōksa Organics Bar Soaps to try out.  I have to say, when this package arrived, I was on my way to work so I opened it at the office and the aroma smelled like a spa in a box.  Such great smells.  I kept sniffing it all day and made my office mate smell it too.

The soaps I received were Iceland Mint and Amazon Lemon. These are not tiny bar soaps.  I think these will last a long while.  They are also beautiful to look at, if you like a nice looking bar soap.  The thing that gets me most is the amazing smell though.  Nothing beats a wonderful smell filling your shower or bath.  It can really alter your mood and wake you up or relax you depending on what aroma it is.

These bar soaps lather well and work really well with a shower poof. I got so much later using an exfoliating poof that I washed my entire body with suds to spare. My natural soap addiction is very happy with this discovery.  These are fantastic natural soaps full of amazing aroma and mōksa organics is a full line of organic, carbon neutral, palm oil free body care so they are good for you and the environment too.

You can find Vegan Cuts at www.vegancuts.com and the bar soaps are on their site listed under Body Care.   They have the bar soaps available in sets of 2 or a set of 3 so you can try a variety. They also have other products from the mōksa organics brand.  Better yet, I have a coupon code for you! Enter code "BLOGFRIEND" and save an additional 10% off your order, doesn't apply to shipping, expires Oct 31/12.

Stand Up To Cancer - My Brother's Star

Did you watch Stand Up To Cancer Friday night?  Lots of celebrities hosting a TV show to help fight cancer? Telling their stories, the stories of others, encouraging donations?  I saw most of it and decided that I need to launch a star for my brother, Daniel.  Daniel was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma when he was 3 years old, he went through treatment and remission and then relapsed at the age of 7.  Daniel lost his battle in August 1995, just days before his 8th birthday.

Most of us are touched by cancer in one way or another.  I don't think there are many of us who do not know someone who have had cancer if not ourselves.  My brother lost his battle as did a beautiful 16 year old from my high school, Tara,  in 1994 and more recently an amazing woman and friend of my entire family, Jenn, just months ago.

If you would like to donate, you can visit Stand Up To Cancer or you can visit my brother's star.  For $1 or more, you can leave a comment on his star page or you can create your own to honor someone you know.

New Bare Minerals Ready SPF 20 Foundation

Since I could not budget in shopping for all of the new Bare Minerals Ready stuff, I went to an event at a local spa/salon that sells Bare Escentuals.  They had a Ready Release party so I wanted to get a color match and try out the new Ready SPF 20 Foundation

They had me wear Fairly Medium which looks a lot darker and cooler than my usual Fairly Light or Golden Fair.  Somehow, it worked.  It looked right on my skintone.  I think these shades, if you get close to your skin color, might be almost as forgiving as the loose Bare Minerals foundations.

My fave thing about the new foundation is the new precision face brush! It feels amazing on your skin and it is synthetic which is amazing since I am only using synthetic brushes on my face now.  I may have to get this one.

What I was told about the new Ready foundation:
  • They said it should last about 4 hours longer than the loose foundation for coverage
  • You definitely need to go darker for your shade if you were the loose foundation
A pic of me wearing the new Ready SPF 20 Foundation in Fairly Medium:

Ingredients for Ready SPF 20 Foundation:
Active Ingredients: Titanium Dioxide 11%, Zinc Oxide 18%. Inactive Ingredients: Boron Nitride, Octyldodecyl Stearoyl Stearate, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Glycerin, Magnesium Silicate, Silica, Nylon-12, Humic Acids, Rosa Canina Fruit Oil, Jojoba Esters, Corallina Officinalis Extract, Lecithin, Betaine, Algae Extract. May Contain: Mica, Bismuth Oxychloride, Titanium Dioxide, Iron Oxides.

Ingredients for the Original Loose Foundation in Comparison:
Active Ingredients: Titanium Dioxide 12.6%, Zinc Oxide 21%. Inactive Ingredients: Bismuth Oxychloride, Mica, Iron Oxides, Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide

As you can see the list of ingredients is a bit longer for the Ready foundation.  I wanted to look into the list since I don't recognize some of them.  I know the Loose Foundation in Original is natural, how about the Ready foundation?

I looked up the ingredients and most can occur in nature.  From what I read about one ingredient, I thought it wasn't from nature but a reader found a source that said it can come from nature. Are the ones here from nature? I am not sure without talking to BE about their product development info.

I looked up each ingredient individually and didn't really find much info.  I normally check online first since most ingredients show up in EWG's skin deep cosmetics database. These all show up there so I linked to their listings below. There isn't a lot of info on these which I see as a good thing more than a bad thing.  If these were bad chemicals, they would show up with warnings.   I also checked my ingredient blacklist in No More Dirty Looks and the only ingredient that shows up there is Lecithin. Beyond that, none of these are listed as must avoid ingredients.

I hope this information is helpful if you are still on the fence about this foundation.  If all else fails, go try it out.  Most places that sell Bare Minerals have it available now. See what you think!  For me, I am not buying it right now.  I still have plenty of loose original foundation on hand and don't really have the money right now.  Maybe later?
