Suzinn Weiss Fragrances: Jasz

On a trip to Portland Oregon, I discovered a fabulous fragrance called Jasz.  I found it in a cool all natural beauty boutique called Camellia (which I am very sad to see has closed) and decided that I had to buy it.  It is a tiny roller ball scent.  The fragrance is an all natural blend of essential oils, organic jojoba oil, fractionated coconut oil or neutral grain spirit.  These are safe to apply to your skin (unless you have personal allergies or issues with those ingredients).

It is a tiny bottle but lasts long.  The artwork on it is gorgeous and the scent, OMG so yummy.  I am very sensitive to fragrance and strong scents and this doesn't bother me at all, I assume the natural part helps a lot with that.

Info from the Suzinn Weiss Website

As a gardener I am often immersed in the heady smells of earth, plants and flowers so it seemed natural to develop a line of all natural perfume that contain my favorite scents from the garden and forest. I use pure botanical essences from around the world.
I created these fragrances as an alternative to mass- produced perfume and they contain only the finest natural ingredients with no synthetic agents.  Essential oils are mixed with organic jojoba oil, fractionated coconut oil or neutral grain spirit and can be applied directly to the skin.*  Enjoy these scents and remember to share them with a hug.

I also create custom perfumes upon request.
Please contact me for more information.

jasz is a melodic whisper on your skin, soulful and exotic with notes of jasmine and lemon verbena blended with ginger and clove.

Nanoparticles and Mineral Makeup - What's the deal?

This has been something I have known about for a while but many, especially those newer to natural beauty products and mineral makeup, might not know about nanoparticles and micronized minerals and whether or not mineral makeup is dangerous or not due to a lot of scare tactics and hype from various media venues.

I am not here to bash anyone who said mineral makeup is bad or mineral makeup is the safest thing in the world.  I am here to inform.  Since my day job is as an academic librarian, I am able to do a lot of research and put some information together for you here.  I shared an article about the safety of mineral makeup on Twitter and Facebook yesterday and it got questions so I thought, I should share some info here that I think will help.

A story that I would like to share:  In October 2010, I attended a Bare Escentuals event at Bloomingdales in NYC.  Leslie Blodgett and Bravon Pascua were there to do a live makeup demo on Leslie's niece and Leslie opened up the floor to any questions from the public.  Someone asked her about the dangers of mineral makeup and how media was saying it was so bad for you.  Leslie said she has worn it for years (I can't remember the exact number so this is not an exact quote) and she has the healthiest lungs you can find.  She declared Bare Minerals to be safe and healthy and also told us all, "Don't snort your minerals!"  That is the only exact quote from that event LOL

It seems a bit to be common sense.  Yes, if I throw my entire jar of mineral makeup in the air and then inhale it all, I assume that probably isn't so safe but if I apply it properly, there should not be much getting in the air as it should be on my brush and then melding into the warmth of my skin.  The minerals should feel creamy on your skin which does away with the powdery feel and mess in the air.  Yes, you will still get some mineral fallout, which is why I keep my minerals on a placemat, but you should not have a room coated in minerals.  I think most of my mess comes from replacing the jar lid that I just swirled my mineral makeup in.

I hope you find this info helpful and informative.  For some of you it might be old news but I think it is a good topic to bring up for those who are still thinking or hearing that mineral makeup it bad for you.  I have access to more academic research information through the library where I work but my readers do not have access to the college library where I work so they would not be of much use to you and I want you to read for yourselves and develop your own thoughts and opinions on it, not just read what I think and have to say.

Below I have collected some online resources that I think will give you a good background and info on the topic.  I tried to find some that spoke in terms that were easy to understand and seemed fairly reliable.

This is the article I shared yesterday:

Badger Yoga & Meditation Balm and Chopra Center 21-day Meditation Challenge

I am very much a yoga & meditation kind of girl. I am still working on trying to make this a regular part of my daily life but even when I practice on occasion, I can truly feel the difference. I started meditating about a year ago when the Chopra Center offered their 21-day meditation challenge for free.  I have done their challenges twice since then and there is a new one starting now.  You can read more about it and sign up for free here: https://www.chopracentermeditation.com/Bestsellers/RegistrationPage.aspx?BookId=169
I love their program because they follow a simple structure.  Each day, you are emailed that day's meditation to do at your leisure, anywhere, anytime. It is a guided meditation that you listen to so you aren't left on your own to try to meditate and distract yourself with other thoughts (which can still happen with guided meditation but they help bring you back to focus). If you miss a day, that is fine, you can catch up the following day.  I absolutely love the theme of this particular challenge, "Free to Love."

I purchased the Badger Yoga & Meditation Balm quite a while ago with this in mind. I finally set up a little yoga & meditation nook with a meditation pillow, my yoga & meditation balm, headphones and yoga supplies. My yoga and meditation balm tin matches my yoga bolster pillow and meditation pillow which are both purple.  Purple seems to be a good meditative color.  The balm smells amazing.  I massage some into my temples to release some tension but I also like to just close my eyes and take deep breaths while inhaling the aroma from the balm.  It is like a restorative mini-meditation on its own. It was perfect to get me to wind down and get ready to do my full meditation. I think I need a 2nd tin to put in my yoga bag so I can use it for yoga class too. Just look how relaxed and zen that little badger on the tin looks.  Don't you want to feel like that?  I know I do!

Sea Air Scents - air fresheners from Maine

I discovered these products at a farmer's market in Maine earlier this month.  We were on our way out of town after a few days on the coast and my boyfriend wanted to stop for blueberries.  We checked out all the other booths and these caught my attention.  Sea Air Scents are air fresheners that are more natural and environmentally friendly.  They are phthalate free and also non-aerosol and alcohol free. Right now, it looks like these are only available in Maine but it can't hurt to send her a message if you are interested or look for her products if you happen to be in the area. I am hoping she might open an Etsy shop someday, otherwise I guess I will have to keep going back to the Maine coast, darn!  I really enjoyed my few days there and these are a great reminder and memento from our trip.

I picked up a spray in Beach Bum in Maine which is an awesome coconut  fruity smell that reminds me of that yummy sunscreen aroma. This is especially yummy to me since I can't wear chemical sunscreen anymore and more natural ones do not smell like that.  Coconut is one of my fave scents.

We also picked up a smaller spray bottle in Pina Colada, only because the larger size was sold out.  My boyfriend and I loved this one.  Another delicious fruity scent with coconut and pineapple.

Badger Foot Balm

One of the items I bought on my visit to Badger was their Foot Balm.  This had been on my wishlist so I knew I had to buy it.  If you know me well, you know I have very sore problematic flat feet.  I can't wear fancy high heels.  I have trouble walking a lot.  I get very sore and tired out but I push on through as best as I can.  My feet and I have had a love/hate relationship in the past.  It was very hard to feel so limited compared to others my age but now I appreciate my feet for what they do for me.  They work hard and they get me where I need to go.

I tend to live in either sneakers with orthotics or Birkenstocks.  I do have some other shoes but these are my day to day shoes.  Anyone who wears either of these knows that they can be a bit rough on the skin of your feet.  They support my feet but I also tend to get some callouses and rough spots and with a large amount of walking I can get blisters on my callouses. Hence, my desire to try out the Badger Foot Balm.

I enjoy pampering my feet on my own.  I have never really liked getting pedicures.  I think my feet are too sensitive.  I don't mind a nice foot rub though.  I always paint my toenails so I want my feet to look and feel soft and moisturized.

Last night, I applied a bunch of Badger Foot Balm to my feet.  I did one foot at a time.  I got a decent amount of the product on my hand and then massaged it into my feet.  I paid close attention to apply extra to the really roughed up spots like my heels, fallen arches and big toes.   Once my feet felt fully coated, not too much or too little, I put ankle socks on and wore them to bed.

You can feel the natural oils, it feels very smooth on.  Not like a lotion or cream but like a balm that melts into your skin as it warms to the touch.  The smell isn't as minty as you might expect.  I found the aroma very soothing which was nice before bed.

Today,  my feet feel so soft!  I had a really bad callous on one of my arches and it feels much smoother and nicer as though it is finally healing. My skin was so rough yesterday that parts would catch on my clothes if I tried to change how I was sitting and felt scratchy if it rubbed against my leg, yucky!  My toes feel soft, my heels look and feel much better.  I am so happy with this purchase!  Gotta love a great natural product like this.  Simply apply it and keep it on with little socks and your feet will thank you for it!
Pic of my Badger haul, you can see the foot balm tin in the middle of the 3 tins on the right

Check it Out: bareMinerals SPF 20 Correcting Concealer from Missing Utopia

Missing Utopia is a makeup blog by someone I know from long ago in the Bare Escentuals forums.   She covers a variety of brands like Bare Escentuals, Bobbi Brown, Laura Geller, Tarte, etc.  Since I know I have some readers who love these brands and don't only wear natural products like I do, I wanted to share her latest review.  Missing Utopia had the opportunity to test out the new Bare Escentuals SPF 20 Correcting Concealer which is being launching soon and since I don't get to preview new BE products coming out, I wanted to point you in her direction.

This product isn't natural but the review seems to say it is a great one so it is worth a look.  Luckily, I don't need a heavy duty concealer so I will stick with the natural loose mineral alternative of Bare Escentuals Summer Bisque for now. My chemical sensitivities and allergies prevent me from trying this one out but I am sure it is a great item for my makeup junkies and/or those in need of a better concealer.  If you want to know more about the new SPF Correcting Concealer, check it out on Missing Utopia.

My Visit to the Badger Mines

My boyfriend and I went on a mini-vacation in New England and had the pleasure of stopping at Badger Company for a tour and some shopping.  Yay! They often have events at the Badger Mines (as they call their company location).  Keep your eyes out for posts about everything from educational events about beekeeping to big "seconds" sales that I think they have a few times a year. I hope to get back there for one of those sales.

We arrived at the company and as we walked, my boyfriend asked, "what is that over there?"  I said, "hmmmm, I think that is their bees."  Then he pointed in the opposite direction, "and what is that?" to which I said, "it is probably for meditation." The funny thing is, I was right with my guesses.  The first thing we saw when we parked was their beekeeping area, then as we walked up to the company there was a garden and a labyrinth for meditation. When we walked inside, the aroma of essential oils hit us.  I took a nice deep breath.  It smells sooooo good there.  So happy!  After a hectic trip full of lots of driving, I needed that. We checked in at the desk and waited for the Badger blogger/social media guru to come meet up with us and give us a tour.

We got to learn all about the company; info about their ingredients, the great mission and values but it was also nice to see the way all the people there work together.  They are all pretty close and they all believe in what they do.  You can tell from how hard they work, how happy they seem, the general vibe of the place.  They really live the company mission.  They have a community kitchen area where organic food is prepared for meals, a yoga area, a rec area.  I wished I worked there! Don't get me wrong, they work hard but wow, what an encouraging atmosphere.

We got to see some of the bug spray & balm being packaged, the packing area, office areas, storage, shipping.  As we walked through, people popped up to wave hi.  We got to see the secret badger lab where new concoctions are being made and scents are being combined.  Then we had the honor of meeting Badger Bill himself.  We had such a great time and that isn't just the aromatherapy talking.  Yes, the whole place smelled amazing, like walking through a giant cloud of Cheerful Mind Balm, but you could also feel the vibe of the place without it.  I love a company where you can tell the people believe in their product and love what they do.  I also have to give them cheers for their babies at work program.  When we got there, we were introduced to a "badger" who just got back from maternity leave and had her baby with her at the office.

You can learn all about Badger here: http://www.badgerbalm.com/s-13-who-we-are.aspx

We also got to do a little shopping.  I have never seen the whole Badger product collection in person so I was excited.  I picked up a tote bag, foot balm, after sun balm, aromatic chest rub, bug spray and a bottle of the organic olive oil used in their products.  They tell me it tastes amazing so I can't wait to try it out.  My boyfriend picked up a Badger tshirt which I love and almost wish I got one too.  They let us have a bunch of Badger stickers and I got a fun little treat to test out.  I am looking forward to trying out the products we picked up and plan to review them all here.

I really hope to get back there when they have an event going on.  I would love to see things in action and of course, hope to get there for a sale.  I am also so glad we stopped there.  I get very unstable mood-wise from corn products and try to avoid them as much as possible since I did  my elimination diet. This was really hard to do while away from home and I have to admit, I was in a bit of a mood the past couple days.  Being at Badger really cheered me up.  I am going to thank them for the good vibes and wonderful aromatherapy.

What's in Heather's Beach Bag?

Happy 4th of July! If you are heading out into the sunshine and to the beach this week, like I plan to, you might be thinking about what needs to go in your beach bag.  I wanted to share my beach must have products with you!   Click on the pic to see the item online.

Not included in this list but still things I love for the beach: A good book, plenty of water to keep hydrated, snacks and a well insulated lunch box with an ice pack to keep your food safe and cool.
A great large pair of sunglasses, my fave brand is Fossil, larger glasses give better protection from the sun. Pic from fossil.com
