Josie Maran Argan Lip Glosses in Authentic & Radiance

I was finally able to get my hands on some Josie Maran products which I know many of you have requested of me.  Fortunately, I was sent 2 argan lip glosses to review for my blog.

These lip glosses have beautiful color and texture.  They aren't sticky or goopy.  I think they have a nice dimensional look with some sparkle, at least the shades I tried. The only think I noticed about them is that the scent stands out a bit to me.  It isn't my favorite but I don't hate it either.  I guess it is just very different than the usual sweet or minty lippies I wear.

Revolution Organics Freedom Glow Beauty Balm - Sunkissed

One item I was excited to finally try out was Revolution Organics Freedom Glow Beauty Balm.  I picked this up in my Spirit Beauty Lounge order a while ago and took a bunch of pics to share.  I had heard excellent things about this brand and this product.  I opted for the shade, Sunkissed, which is a warm peachy shade.

Freedom Glow Beauty Balm is a great multi-tasker that is natural.  It can be used on your lips, cheeks, eyes and even your d├ęcolletage.  It comes in 2 other shades and I think between the 3 shades, you would be covered year round for any look you might want.  You can go pinker with Blushed or go summery and golden with Bronzed.  This is compact and great for travel.  Toss it in your purse, take it in your carry-on bag, keep it in your desk at the office.  I loved how this looked so different on my cheeks from my lips.  You can apply it lightly or heavily.  It feels great on.  My fave use is cheeks and lips but I can totally see using it for everything.  I see it as an ideal summer tote item since I like to go more simple with my make up in the summer, especially if I am going to the beach.  It retails for $34 each which might seem a little pricey but think about how many products you are getting in one.  Not a bad deal at all, especially for high quality natural cosmetics.

Taken with natural sunlight.  Sunkissed on my lips and cheeks.  Don't mind my eyes looking different, this is also the day I took before and after mascara pics LOL
Taken with flash, Sunkissed on my cheeks and lips.

Honeybee Gardens Truly Natural Mascara

Honeybee Gardens had a discount code special going a while ago so I finally placed an order to try out their Truly Natural Mascara, an eyeliner and an eyeshadow palette.  First, I want to talk about the mascara.

I picked up the mascara in Espresso.  It is a nice soft dark brown that adds boldness to my eyes without being a harsh black.  I love how gentle it is on my eyes.  I haven't had any trouble with it smearing or flaking. I can apply a nice light single coat for a natural day or add more coats and wiggle the mascara wand for more oomph to my lashes.  So far I am really liking this mascara a lot.  My sensitive eyes have had no trouble with it.  It retails for $10.99 on their site and I have seen it in local natural shops in my area.

Pics of my eyes with this mascara on.  One eye with mascara, one eye without.
Taken with natural sunlight. Left eye no mascara, right eye wearing Truly Natural Mascara
Same pic as above but taken with flash.

Info from the Honeybee Gardens Website

Here's proof that a truly natural mascara CAN be amazing! Our silky, lash-defining mascara is totally weightless yet provides all day color. The smooth light-as-a-feather base boasts zero clumping due to the absence of clay in the superior lash-conditioning formula. Bat your eyes and flutter your lashes without flaking and smudging. Perhaps best of all is that this botanically-enriched mascara is paraben free. Water-resistant, work-out proof. Not water-proof.

Espresso - black/brown
Chocolate Truffle - brown
Black Magic - black

Beauty Tips:
1) Apply one coat for a natural, eye-defining look.
2) Drama queen? Apply two coats. Unlike traditional mascaras that clump after one coat with lashes stuck together (making application of a second coat nearly impossible,) our mascara remains light and silky. You can easily apply that second coat to get a more dramatic look without harming delicate lashes.

Product Ingredients: purified water, vegetable glycerin, beeswax, copernicia cerifera (carnauba) wax, vegetable glyceryl stearate, lecithin, vegetable stearic acid, safflower oil, glycine soja (soybean) oil (and) aloe barbadensis leaf extract, simmondsia chinensis (jojoba) seed oil, silica, cellulose gum, tocopherol, xanthan gum, chamomilla recutita (matricaria) flower extract, rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) leaf extract, cucumis sativus (cucumber) fruit extract, phenoxyethanol. May contain: mica, iron oxide (CI 77499, 77491, 77492), titanium dioxide (CI 77891).

Acure Organics Argan Stem Cell + CoQ10 Dry Shampoo

I was sent Acure Organics new Argan Stem Cell + CoQ10 Dry Shampoo to try out for review.  I have been interested in testing out more natural haircare products so this was a great one to start with.  This dry shampoo is a quick natural way to absorb oils and grime on your scalp and hair so you feel clean without doing a full shampoo and condition.

When I tested this out, I sprinkled it on my hands and massaged it into my scalp, especially around my hairline bordering my face, the part in my hair and any other spots where I tend to notice that I get oily. Directions say to brush it out after you do that but my hair is getting long and is quite curly so brushing is a no go for me so I combed my fingers through my hair and did an upside down shake and that seemed to work fine.

I used style products from Deva Curl the day before so I was able to use Deva Curl Mister Right to reactivate them and scrunch my hair.  My hair looked great and had more volume and oomph than usual.  I normally don't skip shampooing because my skin can start to break out around my hairline.  This product prevented that from happening.  It worked really well and lasted.  I was happy with the look and feel of my hair, though I did have some knots.  I think I'll have to figure out how to deal with the knots but this will be amazing when I blow out my hair straight.  It will be easier to brush my hair out that way, plus I can straighten my hair the night before instead of trying to take the time in the morning before work.

You can find it at http://www.acureorganics.com/ and it retails for $12.99 which is a decent price in my book.

Pics of how my hair turned out.

The Mission of Conscious Box

Conscious Box is dedicated to introducing you to the most ethical, sustainable, and honest businesses that create the purest products available. We scour the marketplace to find those that stand above the rest. Discovery defines the Conscious Box experience.

The Importance of Discovery

We emphasize discovery for a number of reasons. Discovery leads to enlightenment, stronger understanding of others, and better personal and planetary health. By finding conscious businesses that support your personal needs, you can do a lot for the world just by making responsible shopping decisions.

What about Greenwashing?

Conscious Box is committed to overcoming the problem of greenwashing. Used to describe deceptive business tactics that lead consumers to believe something is “green” when it really isn’t, “greenwashing” is rampant in today’s markets. We hope to educate, inform, and prevent consumers from falling for these tactics by providing them with products that are authentic and purposeful."

The Ethics of Consciousness

Conscious Box, above all, is dedicated to the very ethics it seeks out in other businesses.

Resource Use

We strive to make every aspect of our business as sustainable as possible. We're always looking for ways to reduce waste and increase efficiency to support a more conscious approach to business. Some of the ways we do this is by using 100% post-consumer recycled cardboard, recycled tissue paper, and vegetable-based inks for printing. We also encourage our subscribers to upcycle their boxes and share their ideas on our Facebook page. We're striving to make our business as waste-free as possible, but only you can make this a truly zero-waste experience!

Smart Shipping

We recognize that although we strive to be a waste-free business, the process of shipping can be taxing on our environment. That's why we designed our box with this problem specifically in mind. The size of each Conscious Box was strategically chosen to maximize shipping efficiency while still providing enough space for a huge variety of products in a wide range of shapes and sizes. We're constantly improving upon this process, and always on the lookout for new ways to improve our carbon footprint. As a member of 1% for the Planet we seek to help offset these emissions, and are seeking partnerships with other organizations to continually lessen our impact.

Honest Labor at Fair Wages

Conscious Box is also a supporter of jobs here in the United States. We only employ American workers who receive fair wages for the packing and shipping of boxes. All employees of Conscious Box are also encouraged to speak their minds and help the company move forward. To us, this is a family more than a business.

Protecting the Planet

Conscious Box is also committed to conserving and preserving our home, Mother Earth. We work with 1% for the Planet to make sure every purchase goes to a cause, and we also are active in the green community, spreading the message of environmentalism and encouraging others to take a critical stance when it comes to personal and public sustainability.

Committed to Customers

Finally, we encourage all of our subscribers to write us, review us, and be critical of us! No business is perfect, and Conscious Box is no exception. We constantly seek ways to improve our business, and we know you, the consumer, knows best. Tell us your thoughts and help us make change!

An Unjunk Your Junk Food Review & Giveaway!

You may remember when I posted about winning a copy of Unjunk Your Junk Food and wrote a short book report on it.   If not, you can read it here.  Now, I've had a chance to really work with the book and was sent a free copy to review by http://www.naturallysavvy.com/.  I have to say, since first getting this book in January, I have learned a lot.

Unjunk Your Junk Food: Healthy Alternatives to Conventional Snacks is a book by Andrea Donsky and Randy Boyer with Lisa Tsakos.  You can read about the book, find links to where you can buy it, learn about the authors and more at http://www.naturallysavvy.com/book/unjunk-your-junk-food

Since doing my elimination diet to check for food intolerances and reactions, I have become much more aware of ingredient labels on my food.  That is only one step because it is still hard to know what to look for or avoid.  With current trends in the food industry, it is also hard to know what brands or products to trust.  Just because a product says it is natural or healthy, doesn't mean it actually is. This handy dandy little book will help with that.

Some great features of this book:
  • The book is small. It is about 6"x6" and less than an inch thick.  It should fit in your bag or be easily stored for access to refer to it when you need to or when you are grocery shopping.
  • It has a list of the worst ingredients and ingredients to be aware of on a page you can cut out of the book to keep with you or you can go to their site and register to get a copy of the list you can print.
  • There is good easy to follow information about ingredients, food choices and more.  It makes it really comfortable to read.  The layout keeps your eyes moving around and you don't have to love reading to enjoy the book.
  • It is chock full of side by side comparisons of different types of junk foods with a bad choice on the left page and a good naturally savvy approved food on the right page.  If you find a food you tend to buy on the bad side, don't worry, just look to the right of it for a great suggested food that is a healthier choice.
  • I loaned my copy to a friend and she said her boyfriend loves the book and keeps asking where he can find the alternatives to his favorite junk foods! She said this book helped her finally get through to him about all the processed food he eats. I don't know about you but my boyfriend doesn't like being told his favorite foods are bad for him.  This book is a good one for them to look over on their own and make their own decision.
  • The book covers a variety of junk food groups.  You can find sections on Chips, Dips, & Party Food, Ice Cream & Other Treats, Cookies, Chocolate, Cakes & Other Desserts, Granola Bars & Other On-The-Go Snacks, Candy, Soda & Other Drinks
  • There is a glossary so if you aren't sure what something is, go look in the back of the book for an explanation.
  • They also include a full listing of brands they have pre-approved for you.  You don't have to do all the work on your own.  It is great to find trusted brands and stick with them.  This has really helped me a lot.
Their worst ingredients list is broken up into groups that they call, "The Scary Seven." Here is that scary list:
  • HFCS: High-Fructose Corn Syrup (AKA glucose-fructose in Canada)
  • TRANS-FATS: Anything listed as 'partially hydrogenated' or 'hydrogenated' (includes vegetable shortening)
  • MSG: Monosodium Glutamate
  • ARTIFICIAL FLAVORS: Any artificial flavoring
  • ARTIFICIAL COLORS: Any type of artificial dyes
  • ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS: Chemical sweeteners including Aspartame, Splenda (sucralose), Ace-K (Acesulfame Potassium), Saccharine, etc
  • PRESERVATIVES: Polysorbate 60, 65 & 80, TBHQ, Sodium Benzoate, BHA, BHT, Sulfur Dioxide (sulfites)
Looking at this list might be overwhelming at first but the alternatives they give you help you clear out some of this junk from your junk food.  The first one on the list has been a big one for me as I learned during my elimination diet that I am intolerant of corn and corn syrup particularly bothers me.

Foods I kicked to the curb:
  • Regular Potato Chips of most varieties
  • OREOs (this was a dairy free guilty pleasure since it was safe for my lactose intolerance but not so safe overall)
  • Pre-made refrigerated dough products from Tollhouse & Pillsbury
  •  Packaged Doughnuts
  • Cake & Brownie Mixes from Duncan Hines, Betty Crocker & Pillsbury  (Some of these were a quick easy to grab way to bake dairy free cake but they are way too processed)
  • Canned Frosting from those same brands
  • Mainstream brand chewing gums
  • Name Brand Soda
  • Most BBQ Sauces
Some great new foods I discovered from reading this book or by picking them up while using the ingredients list and finding the brand listed in the book so I knew I picked something good:
  • Yummy Earth Lollipops (I now keep these in my desk at work)
  • Glee Gum (the ONLY gum I will chew)
  • Back to Nature Cookies & Crackers
  • Kettle Brand Potato Chips
  • Simply Organic Herbs, Seasonings and Mixes (I especially like their Basil Pesto mix)
  • Kinnikinnik Doughnuts & breads
  • Dr. Oetket cake & brownie mixes
  • Late July Crackers & Cookies
  • Dinosaur BBQ Sauces

Biggest shocker from all this for me, especially since it is something I really need to look out for...CORN SYRUP! Holy cow, this stuff was all over my kitchen. I have cleared out majority of it.

We already avoid artificial sweeteners so paying more attention to artificial flavors and colors is the next step.

The hardest one to spot, in my opinion, when checking labels on your own is preservatives. This is a list I need to keep on hand to help me review ingredient lists.
Now that I have read this book, I rarely shop in the middle of the grocery store.  I'm not sure if you had heard the tip that the most healthy natural foods are along the border of the grocery store but it seems to hold true.  I tend to stick with the border and luckily my local grocery store, Hannaford, has a great organic & natural section.  I so also shop their international section which is conveniently right next to Organic & Natural.

On with the giveaway!  Since I already have my own personal copy of this book, I want to share the brand new copy I was sent for for review.  You can enter below in the Rafflecopter giveaway area.  Please view all giveaway rules in Rafflecopter below.

Vapour Organic Beauty Elixir Lip Gloss in Hypnotic

Yesterday, I blogged about my Pure Citizen haul when I purchased 4 lippies from Vapour Organic Beauty on a discounted rate, woohoo for discounts! Today I am going to talk about the Elixir Lip Gloss that I purchased as part of that order. The color I picked was Hypnotic.  I decided on this after a Google search for images of the products and found someone wearing this along with Knockout lipstick and loved the look so it made up my mind.

This gloss comes in a cute little tube and applies really easily.  It goes on sheer with a hint of color or it goes great over a lipstick for a look with more depth and shine.  No yucky sticky mess with this one.  My lips felt super moisturized.  No thick gooey feeling, no grittiness, just plain smooth creamy lips!

The elixir lip glosses come in 5 shades that work for all skin tones.  I look forward to trying more of them eventually.  This one is a great shade for year round wear even though it looks dark, it applies sheer.  Then when you want a more bold look, apply it over your fave lipstick.  I love versatile products like this.  They retail for $20 each.
