Ouch, my eye! AKA Why Haven't I Been Posting This Week

As many of you already know, I have not been around much this week because I injured my eye last weekend.  I went in Target and my BF handed me a black plague doctor mask to try on from the funky Halloween display of Venetian/Mardi Gras/etc masks.  I went to try it on and suddenly something poked me in the eye.  I was in excruciating pain and buckled right over the shopping cart.  My BF could not figure out what happened until I was able to tell him.  My swearing filter had completely gone out the window, that is how bad this hurt. We looked at the mask and saw a plastic security tie around the eye area that was black and matched the mask so it was very hard to see, not only that but it was sticking straight out towards you when you were looking to put the mask on.  He checked the other masks and the ties were supposed to be wrapped around the eye area, not sticking straight out.  No one in the store seemed to react to my dramatic injury reaction, though I guess maybe I could have yelled louder?  I kept the cuff of my hoodie over my eye because it hurt and I could not keep it open and my eye was watering all over my face.  We made out way out of the store.

I am usually pretty tough when it comes to injuries, never even cried when I hurt my back and shoulders in a car accident but this....this took me down.  I cried like a little kid once I got back to the car. Once we got home, I was still in a lot of pain.  I texted my optician friend for suggestions and emailed my aunt who is a nurse and of course, did some googling and applied an ice pack.  Everyone said, go to the ER or doctor ASAP.  It was a Saturday so the ER was the only option. Luckily, the ER didn't take too long, I think we were there for maybe 2-2.5 hours total including wait time and treatment time. They numbed my eye and used dye to check it and told me I had a corneal abrasion. I felt so much better numbed and was so relieved.  They gave me a prescription for antibiotic ointment and told me to keep my eyes closed and rested as much as I could with a cold compress because blinking was why it hurt.
Me after the ER visit, don't worry the reddish orange stuff is dye

It was Saturday and after 7pm by the time we left and we soon found out that no pharmacies are open after 7pm on Saturday in our local area.  I gave up and headed home and soon the numbing stuff wore off and I was in agony.  I survived the night.  My BF and Mr. Kitty helped take care of me.  I slept as much as I could and got up early on Sunday to run out and get my prescription ASAP.  Throughout the day I kept passing out on the couch and waking up to find Mr. Kitty sleeping on me.  My body must have been working hard at healing because I normally don't do that unless I have the flu or something.  My eye looked way worse on Sunday and was so swollen.  I really looked like I got in a fight. When I felt up to it, I reported the incident to Target's product safety department.
My caretaker, Mr. Kitty who is actually recovering from surgery

I am happy to report that a very good local eye doctor got me in to see him ASAP and said my eye is healing and looks better already.  He was very concerned about scarring so he gave me drops to use instead of the ointment in hopes of speeding the healing process, preventing complications and preventing scarring on my cornea which could affect my vision in the future.  I am still pretty sensitive to the light, wearing sunglasses in the office has become the norm this week. My eye has been pretty twitchy and I am applying 2 kinds of drops 3-4 times per day.  I haven't worn any eye make up yet, though the eye doctor said it should be ok now that it has mostly healed.  I was too nervous to  have anything go near my eye yet.  I plan to finally wear my new Bare Escentuals Ready duos this weekend.  I bought them at my BE Girlfriend Party last week and hurt my eye the next day so I haven't had a chance to try them out.

Needless to say, take good care of your eyes, be careful trying on Halloween masks and never take your eye make up for granted!

  2. Oh my gosh Heather, I'm so sorry that happened to you! You should have told Target while you were there! They should seriously be responsible for any medical bills you have! Take care of yourself!
