My Alima Pure Sample Haul

I finally ordered some samples from Alima Pure.  I mostly ordered sample jars of eye and blush colors.  You can order samples for $1.50 each so I decided that was the best and more affordable way for me to try out a bunch of color, plus they send 2 samples with every order.  Not only that but they ran a special that day that meant you got 5 extra samples with your order of $35 so I got 7 samples on top of the ones I ordered. I also picked out a lippie to try.

The company sticks with pure mineral ingredients and is cruelty free.  Alicia Silverstone often talks about them on her blog, The Kind Life.  I look forward to trying out these colors and posting some looks.  I have heard nothing but good things about the brand so I can't wait.

Lotus Wei Flower Essences & Wei of Chocolates

I first heard about Lotus Wei on No More Dirty Looks blog.  Then soon after, I saw it at a local green spa, Complexions, when I went in for a massage.  I thought about picking some up after my massage and my massage therapist used some of their lotions on me during my massage and I have to say I loved them.  I picked up 2 Body Sprays and 2 of the Chocolates to try out.

On the Lotus Wei website, they ask you to pick the flower that speaks to you the most.  I can never pick just one.  If you go ahead and click on Moods, you will see the collection of body products.  They use flower essences in order to bring nature back into our lives.   Wei of Chocolate is a sister company that makes chocolates containing essences as well. The 2 are meant to help bring more balance and health to you.  The trick with the chocolates is that you are supposed to put it in your mouth and let it melt, never chew.  If you love chocolate like I do, that is not an easy thing to do. I have to say, letting the chocolate melt in my mouth made a difference.  I could taste and appreciate the chocolate as well as the essences.  It let them release into my system at a nice slow pace and it almost felt like a mini meditation just sitting quietly and letting the chocolate do its thing.  With the sprays, I love to spritz myself anytime of day or night.  I use Quiet Mind the most. I love to spray it on before bed to help quiet my thoughts.  It also smells fantastic.  Inspired Action is another favorite of mine.

I had a wonderful experience with their customer service.  One of the spray pumps would not spray so I submitted an online form on their website.  After I didn't hear back, I posted on their facebook page too.  It seems their online form was broken and I helped them discover it so they were very grateful and kind.  They not only sent me a new sprayer for my bottle but 3 sample bottles of Quiet Mind, Infinite Love & Pure Energy.  They seem to really appreciate their customers and are involved in some fun events in the NYC area that I wish I could get to, often combining their essences with yoga.

Some info on the essence moods that I own:

Quiet Mind is meant to help you get rid of tension, calm your mind and sleep soundly.  The scent is described on their website as Refreshing, clarifying Lemon, Geranium, & Coriander. I love this one.  I spritz it on before bed most nights.

Inspired Action is meant to help you get things done, maintain motivation and be clear and decisive. The scent is described on their website as Exotic & spicy with pink pepper, Jamaican bay & citrus.  It is so bright and citrusy, very lime scented on my skin.   It really helps liven me up.  I thought it would be good to help me get moving since I need motivation to get plenty done, get active again and try to be more creative.

Infinite Love is meant to help you attract & enhance love and to be more kind to yourself. The scent is described on their website as Beautiful soft aroma of Red Rose, Red Mandarin, & Beeswax Absolute.Such a pretty natural scent.  Like we all don't need more love and to learn to be more kind to ourselves.

Pure Energy is meant to energize and revitalize as well as protect you from other people's stress.  The scent is described on their website as Warming & yummy Grapefruit, Cinnamon, Coffee & Black Pepper. Another  yummy one and anything that protects me from other's people's stress should come in a vat!

They do not run cheap but I have to say I am impressed.  I got them as a treat to myself on a spa splurge day.  The lotions were used in my massage and she mixed them.  I think I remember her saying she used the Infinite Love and Quiet Mind for me.  I smelled great and felt great when I left.  I also have to say, every single person who worked at the spa was excited about these products.  My massage therapist (who is a friend I know) told me she never believed in aromatherapy until she tried this product line.

As for the chocolates, I wasn't as brave to try the funkier flavors so I picked up the Wei Pure and Wei Inspired.  They are all vegan, organic, gluten free and fair trade.

Bare Escentuals November 2011 TSV - Bare Luxury

I was able to pre-order the new Bare Escentuals Today's Special Value collection that will be sold on QVC on November 18, 2011.  It took quite a long time to get here but it made it.  From now on, when ordering from QVC, I plan to select my preferred shipping method.

This collection is going to be available as a single shipment or auto-delivery.  So far I was able to open items, read the info and do some swatches.  The collection is really pretty and so fun for the holidays.  I love the gold compact, brushes, and lids and the sparkly gold bag.  The bag is a good clutch size with magnetic closure. I totally see someone taking this out for New Years Eve.

I am sad to say that I am not sure that this one is for me.  I need to give it a go and see how I do with it and do a little more investigation of ingredients. This is not a bad reflection on the kit, I know it will be great for a lot of people. I am torn because I love some of the kit but am not sure about all of the items.  Since I am trying to get myself back into sticking with more natural items, I am a little bummed that the new Marvelous Moxie Lipglosses contain synthetic ingredients.  They are free of bad stuff like parabens, sulfates, and phthaltes but they aren't as natural as I would like.  They also have a very strong scent, though it is a natural scent, it might be too strong for me. As soon as I opened them to swatch them I went woooo from the scent.  The Round the Clock liners also have synthetics.  I am on the fence about those too.

On the happier side of things, I really like the Ready Eyeshadow colors and the Rose Gold Radiance from this collection.  The Ready shadows are really pretty to wear together, alone or with other colors from your collection.  The Rose Gold Radiance might be one of my favorite radiances yet.  It is such a great shade for most skintones.

I am going to wear the collection and do more of a report after some wear and plan to research the ingredients for the lip gloss and liners to see how I feel about them.  I think Buxom lovers or those who aren't as into natural products will love them.  They are really pretty.

Here are some pics:
Rose Gold Radiance on top, Below is Round the Clock liner in 10pm and Noon, then Ready Golden Iris & Ready Azure Iris, on the Right is Marvelous Moxie in Daredevil (top) and Wild One (bottom)

Guest Blogger: Vanessa Brooks & Jordan Essentials

I opened up an offer to blog readers who wanted to guest blog about natural beauty products.  The first guest blogger post is here! Welcome Vanessa to the Beauty Au Natural world.

--------------Vanessa Brooks------------------------------------

I am a 37 year old mother of 3, with a passion for skin care and makeup. I am an independent consultant with Jordan Essentials, an American owned company with American made products. Best of all, Jordan Essentials products are SLS, paraben, mineral oil and DEA free. They are safe, effective and for the whole family.
Jordan Essenitals Basic System

My interest in the more natural side to skin care began about 20 years ago, while in college. I got a part time job at a health food/alternative medicine store, and the owner spent a great deal of time educating me on the dangers of various ingredients in skin care and makeup. Over time, I began using the products we sold, and noticed a difference in my facial skin (always oily, acne-prone) and my hair.

I was never much of a makeup gal, always felt it made my skin look worse, and the zits more obvious, so I avoided it when I could. Until I discovered mineral makeup about 10 years ago, thanks to an online buddy. I watched the infomercial, ordered the starter kit, and the rest, as they say is history. Suddenly, my skin looked radiant when I wore makeup, and because my skin could breathe under the makeup, it actually began to heal. Soon I was hooked, and within 2 years I had developed a talent for applying mineral makeup. Friends began to ask me to make them up for special events. And so an obsession began.

Mineral Eye Shadows

From the time my children were born (they are 9,8 and 4) I have been careful which products I use on their skin. Two of my kids had eczema as babies and finding products that were both safe and gentle for their super sensitive skin was no easy task. I eventually found a brand that was safe and gentle, and my husband and I actually became retailers of this well-known brand of products for a couple of years through our website.
Then that company was bought out by a large conglomerate, and I no longer trusted their “naturalness”. I mean, it’s hard for me to believe in a company that claims to be mostly natural, when the parent company sells products that are filled with parabens, SLS, DEA etc. For a while we moved from product to product, never quite finding one brand that we loved for the whole family, and certainly not finding something that was cost-effective.

3 My goofy kids

As my makeover business grew, I began searching for a company with products I could use, and an opportunity to for extra income. Enter Jordan Essentials. Our products are free of parabens, DEA, SLS and mineral oil. The makeup is 100% crushed minerals. There are products for babies and kids. I worried about changing the entire contents of my bathroom to products that I’d never tried before, but I can honestly say that I fell in love with these products from my first shower. The motto of the company is “Treat, Pamper, Spoil”, and honestly, that is how my body feels after a head-to-toe of Jordan Essentials products!

Our sales method is through spa shows at people’s homes and online. The hostess enjoys free and ½ price products. Guests enjoy spa or facial treatments, fun with friends, and an education in safe skincare that won’t break the bank.

In fact, one of the things that pushed me to get into this was the price of the products. You can purchase a complete face care kit and add all the anti-aging products for under $150! Our premium spa kit costs about $1/day and has everything you need for your body. Our spa products include ingredients like Dead Sea salts, shea butter and almond oil. Our facial products contain jojoba, bentonite clay, oats and green tea. Recently we introduced an acne skincare kit, which contains willow bark extract in the moisturizer, and my skin loves it!

Here’s your chance to try out Jordan Essentials – Win a FREE Basic Skin System ($29 value) which consists of Dead Sea salt scrub, shea butter and our signature lotion bar, in your choice of fragrance. To enter: simply send me an email to vbrooks@myjestore.com. In addition, if you make a purchase through this link, you will receive 5 entries. If you schedule a spa show (catalog/online show for non-local people included), you will receive 10 entries. The show must be scheduled for before the end of November. The winner will be picked on November 6th and notified via email.

You may remember me mentioning Bloom.com before.  I am a member and they have a decent selection of natural products to shop for.  When you shop at Bloom, you earn rewards that you can put towards future shopping.  I had rewards saved up and got this haul for less than $9 and that includes shipping!!!  If you are interested in checking out Bloom, visit this invite link: http://www.bloom.com/invite/11808

Badger Stress Soother

Badger Sleep Balm

Eco Tools Bamboo Bronzer Brush
A full size Gilden Tree Foot Cream
a full size Gilden Tree Shea Butter balm

I am really happy with their service, their products and how fast they ship.  Products come packed really well and my only issues have been that they called me with promos a couple times so I emailed and asked them to only email me and they fixed it right away.  Also, my order came UPS and required a signature so I had to wait until today for it to come since no one was home on Friday. I am going to guess that I could have made a note on my order or changed something to avoid that.  Besides that, no problems!

Other great natural or low-chemical brands they have at Bloom:
John Masters, Burt's Bees, Colorscience, Juice Beauty, Pangea Organics, Priti NYC, SkinnySkinny, Zoya and many more! They also carry brands like Clarisonic and Chi!

A look with Bare Escentuals Ready - The Scenic Route

I am finally wearing eye make up again, first time since I injured my eye last Saturday so it has been a week.  I finally got to try out my new Ready - The Scenic Route colors today.  I am avoiding liner for now since I am cautious about the sensitivity of my eye and have to put 2 kinds of prescription eye drops in 3-4 times per day, gets a bit messy.  It is healing well, just gets tired towards the end of the day and has been twitchy.

The Scenic Route is so very me and I got compliments on it today.  Something else to note, I am now using only Eco Tools face brushes.  I still use BE eye brushes mixed with Eco Tools because I like the variety but Eco Tools are so soft and gentle on my face.  Loving them!

I am wearing:

  • BE Brightening Prime Time
  • BE original foundation in Golden Fair
  • BE Summer Bisque as Concealer
  • BE Faux Tan Matte
  • BE Mineral Veil
  • BE Blush in Boost
  • BE Prime Time Primer for eyelids
  • BE Ready Breathtaking from lash to brow
  • BE Ready Spectacular in crease, V and outer 1/2 of lid
  • BE Flawless Definition Curl & Lengthen Mascara in Black
  • BE Pretty Amazing in Rowdy
The Eco Tools eye brush I used for the entire look:

Ouch, my eye! AKA Why Haven't I Been Posting This Week

As many of you already know, I have not been around much this week because I injured my eye last weekend.  I went in Target and my BF handed me a black plague doctor mask to try on from the funky Halloween display of Venetian/Mardi Gras/etc masks.  I went to try it on and suddenly something poked me in the eye.  I was in excruciating pain and buckled right over the shopping cart.  My BF could not figure out what happened until I was able to tell him.  My swearing filter had completely gone out the window, that is how bad this hurt. We looked at the mask and saw a plastic security tie around the eye area that was black and matched the mask so it was very hard to see, not only that but it was sticking straight out towards you when you were looking to put the mask on.  He checked the other masks and the ties were supposed to be wrapped around the eye area, not sticking straight out.  No one in the store seemed to react to my dramatic injury reaction, though I guess maybe I could have yelled louder?  I kept the cuff of my hoodie over my eye because it hurt and I could not keep it open and my eye was watering all over my face.  We made out way out of the store.

I am usually pretty tough when it comes to injuries, never even cried when I hurt my back and shoulders in a car accident but this....this took me down.  I cried like a little kid once I got back to the car. Once we got home, I was still in a lot of pain.  I texted my optician friend for suggestions and emailed my aunt who is a nurse and of course, did some googling and applied an ice pack.  Everyone said, go to the ER or doctor ASAP.  It was a Saturday so the ER was the only option. Luckily, the ER didn't take too long, I think we were there for maybe 2-2.5 hours total including wait time and treatment time. They numbed my eye and used dye to check it and told me I had a corneal abrasion. I felt so much better numbed and was so relieved.  They gave me a prescription for antibiotic ointment and told me to keep my eyes closed and rested as much as I could with a cold compress because blinking was why it hurt.
Me after the ER visit, don't worry the reddish orange stuff is dye

It was Saturday and after 7pm by the time we left and we soon found out that no pharmacies are open after 7pm on Saturday in our local area.  I gave up and headed home and soon the numbing stuff wore off and I was in agony.  I survived the night.  My BF and Mr. Kitty helped take care of me.  I slept as much as I could and got up early on Sunday to run out and get my prescription ASAP.  Throughout the day I kept passing out on the couch and waking up to find Mr. Kitty sleeping on me.  My body must have been working hard at healing because I normally don't do that unless I have the flu or something.  My eye looked way worse on Sunday and was so swollen.  I really looked like I got in a fight. When I felt up to it, I reported the incident to Target's product safety department.
My caretaker, Mr. Kitty who is actually recovering from surgery

I am happy to report that a very good local eye doctor got me in to see him ASAP and said my eye is healing and looks better already.  He was very concerned about scarring so he gave me drops to use instead of the ointment in hopes of speeding the healing process, preventing complications and preventing scarring on my cornea which could affect my vision in the future.  I am still pretty sensitive to the light, wearing sunglasses in the office has become the norm this week. My eye has been pretty twitchy and I am applying 2 kinds of drops 3-4 times per day.  I haven't worn any eye make up yet, though the eye doctor said it should be ok now that it has mostly healed.  I was too nervous to  have anything go near my eye yet.  I plan to finally wear my new Bare Escentuals Ready duos this weekend.  I bought them at my BE Girlfriend Party last week and hurt my eye the next day so I haven't had a chance to try them out.

Needless to say, take good care of your eyes, be careful trying on Halloween masks and never take your eye make up for granted!
