Hula Workout

Thanks to Natural Journeys website for the image
I discovered this workout DVD years ago but really enjoy it, Hula Abs & Buns. As a fan of dance, I was looking for workouts that incorporate dance with toning and cardio. I also love being able to workout barefoot. This was a perfect choice for me. Kili is a great workout leader. She is fun, sweet and encouraging but not obnoxious in that bark at you while all fake smiles kind of way. It is great to do on days when I don't have time to get to the gym. I have to say, after not doing this for well over a year, I really felt it. This is a great workout for me since it involves core strengthening but is lower impact. It also strengthens the upper body in a gentle way which I love because I can feel it but it doesn't irritate my shoulder injury. This is probably not a workout for someone who is into a more advanced level of training but it is great for some fun physical activity and toning for those of us who may not be in the best of shape or who need something to do on days when we whave less time. Bare Escentuals - Morocco, Bali & Now

I finally got a haircut and some highlights today. It had been about 8-10 weeks since my last cut and probably 6 months since my last highlights. I had her run my darker natural color through to blend things in and then some pretty lighter streaks. She blew it straight for me since it is a rare day without high humidity.

I am wearing:

  • Bisque mixed with Summer Bisque as concealer
  • Light Foundation
  • Warmth
  • Tinted FLMV
  • Papaya Blush on cheeks and eyes
  • Bali lash to brow
  • Morocco in crease & V
  • Now wetlined
  • 100% Pure Blueberry Mascara
  • BE 100% Natural Lipgloss in Sangria

Bare Escentuals - Hot Spot, Soho, Heart & Legit

I had this great look that I loved but didn't have time to take pics at home because I had a work picnic today. This is my look after sitting out in the humidity, having a couple drinks and then heading back to the office. My hair seems unhappy from the humidity (and it is also due for a cut) but the BE held up quite well. I am also back to wearing my 100% Pure mascara, hooray. My eye issue was definitely allergy related and has nothing to do with the mascara.

I am wearing:

  • Bisque mixed with Summer Bisque as concealer
  • Light Foundation
  • Warmth
  • Tinted FLMV
  • Giddy Pink Blush on cheeks and eyes
  • Hot Spot lash to brow
  • Heart on lid
  • Soho in crease & V
  • Legit wetlined
  • 100% Pure Blueberry Mascara
  • Burts Bees Lip Shimmer in Caramel

The New BE Shopping Plan

I decided last week that I will no longer buy make up with credit card. If I want new Bare Escentuals, I need to use money I have available. The most important step was I am paying off my QCard. This made it too easy to get auto-delivery kits and to buy large quantities of BE at one time. I not only canceled my last Diamonds AD order, but I removed my QCard from my list of credit cards that can be used on my Q account. I am going to stick with it! It feels good to be more in control of my spending and hopefully reducing my credit card debt while I do it. Pin It StumbleUpon

Family Visit

We had family in town this week. Since I already had Thursday off, I went to visit them. I picked up my mother and we drove up the Sacandaga to the other end of the lake. The camp was in the town of Day. We got there easily and found my aunt, uncle, grandmother and my uncle's sister enjoying the deck. We all went down to the water to relax. My uncle fished in the paddle boat and we enjoyed the surroundings. Eventually my cousin, his fiance and her son showed up. I wish I had brought my swimsuit because I got pretty warm. As soon as my cousin got his swim trunks on, it started to rain. We all ran back to the house.

Soon after, I realized I had a new little friend. My soon to be cousin (my cousin's soon to be step-son) offered me donuts once we got in the camp. After he showered, he asked me to play a game with him, and then another game and another. We played one game I can't remember, then Guess Who and then we played Trouble with my aunt and cousin. After that we all went to dinner. While loading everyone into cars, my new little cousin insisted on riding with me so the car seat had to be moved to my car. We followed the line of cars and had a very long conversation about Care Bears LOL We had a great dinner, you can't go wrong with decent Italian food. All the while I had to sit by my little cousin, color with him, do placemat activities, and eventually he proclaimed that he wanted to marry me. So cute! Of course, the table had to mumble things about me having a boyfriend already or how I am so good with kids and should have a bunch. His mom told me he says he wants to marry her, her sisters and their dog so I asked if the dog was going to wear a dress. He got pretty hysterical and then my aunt misheard and said she thought he was going to ride the dog down the aisle and he lost it. He was roaring with giggles. We all said our goodbyes and my mother and I headed home. What a fun day with family. It is too bad we all live so far away from each other.

I made sure I went home and took pictures of my Care Bear collection and sent them to my cousin. Apparently the reaction to the photos was shaking and asking to know what the names of 2 never seen before Care Bears were, the mysterious care bears were Perfect Panda and Work of Heart Bear.

I am now a land dweller

In the past couple months I have moved out of my parents' basement and into a 2nd floor apartment and now at work, I have moved to a first floor office from the "lower level" aka the basement. We aren't supposed to call it the basement so lower level it is.

My new office is a nice corner space that I share with one of my fellow librarians (and a former classmate). I have been busy decorating and getting settled in since late last week. I am waiting on some copies of photos to put up my final picture collage of friends and family.

It has been an adjustment but a good one. It is far more social up here but I think it is better for me to be up here around people and now cut off but I still get my privacy in the evenings when most people go home.

Panko-breaded Fish Sticks

My latest recipe success! I found this recipe on Martha Stewart's website and decided I wanted to try it out. I went on the hunt for Old Bay Seasoning and finally found some on vacation, of course when I got back I noticed it in every store I went to LOL

I am not a huge fan of dipping sauces for fish so I simply served mine with lemon wedges. I used Cod instead of Tilapia but stuck with the rest of the recipe. I really like how these came out and hope to make them again. If you go to the link below, you can even view a video.

Panko-Breaded Fish Sticks Recipe:

Ingredients

Serves 4
  • 2 cups panko (coarse Japanese breadcrumbs)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • Coarse salt and freshly ground pepper
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • 1 pound sole fillet, cut into 1-by-3-inch pieces

Directions

  1. Place panko, flour, and eggs in three separate shallow dishes; season flour with salt and pepper.
  2. Fill a large skillet with enough oil to reach a depth of 1/4-inch; heat over medium-high heat. Working in batches, dredge fish in flour, shaking off any excess; dip into egg. Transfer fish to panko, covering fish completely and pressing lightly to adhere. Arrange fish in the pan in a single layer without crowding; fry until golden and cooked through, about 1 minute per side. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate to drain; season with salt. Serve immediately.

Watermelon! My favorite summer fruit

I have been living on one of the best watermelons I have tasted in years this past week. We picked this fantastic one by chance, only knowing to look for the sweet spot. Beyond that, we were lucky. I decided to research more about watermelon as it has been helping me curb my sweet tooth and avoid baked good binging which has me feeling healthier and losing weight.

How to pick a good watermelon:

Look for one with a good hollow sound when you knock on it, some even suggest holding it by your ear to truly hear the sound.

Look on the bottom for the "sweet spot" which is where it sat on the ground as it grew. If the spot is light green, it isn't ripe yet. You want to look for a spot that is light yellow and not white. That means the melon is ripe. Don't buy one expecting it to get ripe at home, watermelons stop ripening once they have been picked.

The watermelon should be heavy for its size. The green stripes should be jagged and broken looking. Press your thumb into the skin on all sides. It should feel firm all around.

If you are buying pre-sliced watermelon. Look for one that is dark red in color and firm to the touch.

Health benefits & nutrition information:
Watermelon is not only great on a hot summer day, this delectable thirst-quencher may also help quench the inflammation that contributes to conditions like asthma, atherosclerosis, diabetes, colon cancer, and arthritis.(from WHFoods.com)

Watermelon is the Lycopene Leader in fresh produce, having higher concentrations of lycopene than any other fresh fruit or vegetable. In fact, fresh watermelon contains higher levels of lycopene than fresh tomatoes - a 2-cup serving of watermelon contains and average of 18.16 mg and one medium-sized tomato contains 4 mg. (From watermelon.org)

Vitamins & Minerals (from watermelon.org)

Watermelon Is Practically A Multivitamin Unto Itself
A 2-cup serving of watermelon is an excellent source of Vitamins A, B6 and C.
Vitamin A found in watermelon is important for optimal eye health.
Vitamin B6 found in watermelon is used by the body to manufacture brain chemicals (neurotransmitters), such as serotonin, melatonin and dopamine, which preliminary research shows may help the body cope with anxiety and panic.
Vitamin C in watermelons can help to bolster your immune system's defenses against infections and viruses and is known to stimulate the immune system and protect against free radical damage.
Potassium
A two-cup serving of watermelon is also a source of potassium*, a mineral necessary for water balance and found inside of every cell. People with low potassium levels can experience muscle cramps. A two-cup serving has less than 10 percent of the daily reference value for potassium.

Taking charge, more self control and feeling good!

As I have started to take charge of my finances and my collecting habits, I am now starting to see some success in my health as well.

I had too much credit card debt and once I got a full time job, I was able to start paying more off on balances and also started saving a certain amount every paycheck. Balances are going down, it takes time but it feels good. I have been getting rid of high interest cards and cards for particular stores. It feels very good to be more in control of things and to see progress, even if it is slow.

I decided that I was overdoing it with my make up collection, mostly Bare Escentuals. I decided to start a plan to make myself wear every single eye color I own and then decide if it was something I needed to keep or could part with or maybe sell or gift. As I have gained more control over myself with my desire to purchase new items as they come out, I have felt a lot better. I think eventually I will be able to just buy something here and there and be able to resist the craziness that exists among many over all the new items coming out.

Along with these lifestyle changes, I have started to focus more on my health and my eating habits and lack of activity due to having a desk job. I have started to go back to the gym and am still going to my weekly yoga class. The past week or two, I have been cutting out the baked goods and soda that I was having far too frequently. The soda was not an all day thing but baked sweets was. I would have them far too often and I am quite sure I was not even physically hungry. I've been trying to be more aware of my desires to each things like cake and cookies. Do I just enjoy the pleasure of the sweets? Am I filling a void? Is it an emotional reponse to something? Most likely all of the above all the time LOL I have done pretty well so far. I am still allowing myself sweets but lower calorie and low to no dairy sweets like some gummy bears or swedish fish or watermelon or an apple. I even had some leftover fudge and it was less addictive than cookies or cake for me. I also cut out ice cream which needed to be cut way back on anyway due to my severe lactose intolerance. I have to say, I am feeling much better physically, my digestion seems much better, my mood seems better and I am feeling better and more confident. Today I weighed myself and I have lost 6 pounds since I weighed myself about a week and 1-2 days ago. I could not believe it! 6 pounds!!! I am very proud of myself and hope I can keep it up. If only I could keep finding such great quality fruit, I will have to come up with a new plan for winter since it is harder to find fresh in season apples and watermelon in the winter months. I may have to venture out and try some new things. I will take it one day at a time and see how it all goes. I am just hoping that this will not only make me feel better and help my old clothes fit, if not help them even become loose eventually, but also improve my overall health and my chances to develop diabetes and heart disease.
