Yesterday was my birthday and as part of the celebration, I planned a cupcake decorating party. My girlfriends and I got together, chatted, caught up, decorated and ate lots of cupcakes and had lunch. I think this was a great way to get together with my friends who I don't see very often. Jessica has become a Hello Cupcakes fan and one of her fancy cupcakes can be seen in the pics below.

I baked the cupcakes myself. The chocolate cupcakes were a Cake Mix Doctor recipe. The vanilla cupcakes were from Martha Stewart Living, as was the vanilla frosting recipe. The chocolate frosting was from All Recipes.

The baking went well until I made the last batch of frosting. I melted the chocolate in a microwave safe bowl but the chocolate was so hot it cracked the glass. I felt the crack and it was smooth so I thought it should be safe to use the chocolate but I was too cool when mixed with everything else and came out speckled with tiny lumps of unsweetened chocolate. I took that as a sign and after a break, started over. I was 1/2 a square of unsweetended chocolate short for the recipe but threw in a little cocoa powder, it was still a lighter chocolate frosting than the recipe called for but tasty.

Photos and Recipes:

Vanilla Cupcakes & White Frosting (very good, recommend both recipes, baked from scratch but easy to do)

The Chocolate Buttercream Frosting (yummy, probably even better if you make it correctly)

Chocolate Sour Cream Cupcakes from the Cake Mix Doctor

  1. Happy Birthday! The cupcakes look adorable! (but not too adorable to not eat)

I look forward to reading your comment! Sorry I had to set up moderation because I was getting a lot of spam.
